I was ready to do a complete purge and fill with Amsoil ATF. Until I talked to a courteous and seemingly knowledgable tech at Geno's while ordering the trans filter. He said with the 48re that sticking with ATF+4 is highly recommended, especially now that it's available for a more reasonable price ($4. 42/qt. genuine Mopar at my Wal Mart). He even mentioned that he bought a used CTD that had Amsoil in it, changed to +4 and it shifted better. Then there are the claims of cooler temps, longer service intervals, etc. with Amsoil. Now I see posts stating that some Dodge dealers are pushing Amsoil both over the counter and as a service option. I put a lot of effort into making a decision, and one phone call blew my confidence! I do err on the side of "factory seal of approval," as I am running Valvoline PBE in the engine. Pretty sure I'm going with Amsoil Severe Gear Lube in the diffs. I know responders to this post could give me case after case of success with one option or another, which I've read before and appreciate. I guess what I'm looking for is an idea of how DC could hose me on warranty service if I had a problem after running Amsoil - given that they seem to support it's use in one way, but strictly by the owner's manual it's taboo. Also, I would be interested in feelings about shift performance between the two, as well as observed temp difference. Thanks!

You can't go wrong with the Mopar ATF+4, it is what is reconmended and it works, change it often and you should not have any problems, and it is reasonable from Wal-Mart.

As far as the gear oil, do a search some have had problems with Amsoil in the differentials.

Amsoil ATF is a ATF+4 rated fluid. I run Amsoil in everything on my 2005-no problems at all. The mopar works also the most important thing is doing regular changes of the fluid not which you use.

My T-case used to be pretty tough changing ranges, I put Amsoil ATF in it, and its smooth as glass now. Can't speak for it in the trans, but it's good stuff in the t-case...

The Carson Dodge forum said that the ATF+4 was a Syn Blend and they also sell Amsoil

Amsoil is ATF+4 rated, as stated above, and does meet ALL the requirements of CHRYSLER ATF+ thru ATF+4 performance specifications.

I've had Amsoil in the xfer case and trans since 15K miles (55K at present). Can't say as I've had any issues, good or bad. I tow over 30% of the time from 4K to 9. 5K lbs with no flare-ups, slippy shifts or lack of shift quality.

I'm curious about how you were going to do this. Do you take it to a shop that has the machine, or is there a way for us do-it-yourselfers to do a complete flush?

Does anyone know the fluid (volume) requirements for a drain and fill filter replacement versus a total power flush?
