I believe 3 came in your vehicle....

but I think I read that an up grade from 3 to 4 (just like going from CH to CI rated oil) is an OK thing to do. For an absolute answer... . go to Dieseltrans.com

Either is acceptable. Most dealers still have ATF+3 in stock and ATF+4 is the new fluid that replaced the +3 and earlier variants and was standard issue in all the 02's.

The answer is use +3 if you want to put in what can in it new or use +4 as it is the newer fluid. Dodge even says to use +4 whereever +3 was called for.

FWIW to you,

I switched to regular Mercron/Dexron III a couple of fluid changes ago and the transmission shifts more positive, holds the TC from slipping as much (time for a DTT transmission) and it doesn't foam like the ATF 3: I won't go back to the ATF 3. Needless to say I found this out from this site.

On top of all those postives, it costs less. :)

Aren't you worried about using using Mercron/Dexron instead of the +3 or +4? Why would Dodge purposely recommend using an ATF that makes their product perform less than optimally? It's got to be a longevity issue???

PS. This from a guy who was *****ing about the service manuals calling out the wrong number of quarts of ATF in a service refill! Maybe the manuals are equally shoddily written with regard to ATF types.

Could it be that ATF+4 is an only get it from the dealer product?
