ATF how many quarts

While changing the transmission fluid and filter I managed to spill the catch pan. :{ I was going to measure how much came out and fill with the same amount. Now I have no idea how much to put back in.



Can someone help me out here?

Refill Capacity

Don't believe we have the same transmission but I have changed mine several times. I removed pan/filter only. About 4. 5 quarts. More towards 4 than 5. I change it often because I've read it holds 12. If so, i'm not getting much of the old out of it.

I sure wish the stock converter had a drain plug.

I pulled the inspection cover off and barred the engine over one revolution to see if there was any type of drain plug on it.

No such luck. When doing a filter change theres still a goodly amount of trans fluid left in the converter that can't be drained , unless of course you get a power flush.

What if; you removed both lines at the transmission cooler, clamped on extension hoses, placed hoses in clean containers, filled the suction container with new transmission fluid, cranked engine and let run till only clean fluid was visible on the outlet line, or 12 qts. (if that's the correct amount) of fluid was pulled out of the clean bucket.



Just a thought, kinda a home brew power flush.

Here is what I ended up doing. I filled the transmission until it hit the dipstick (7 quarts- I have the Mag-Hytec pan) Then started the engine, put the transmission in neutral and filled until full (4. 5 more quarts)

While you need to be careful doing this... you can remove the pan and filter, then loosen off the 10 (??) bolts that hold the valvebody in place. That will drain a whole lot more oil than jus the pan only.

The only caution is when you go to snug those bolts back up you need to follow and use the right sequence and torque.

Once those bolts are loose the system almost syphons' itself empty.

When I first installed the MAG-HYTEC trany pan, I removed the old pan, replaced the filter with a new one, installed new pan. Filled trany with new ATF (AMSOIL) till at full line. Removed the line at the transmission, that is the return line from the cooler. Slipped a peice of hose over it, that was long enough to reach a 5 gal pale. Then just start the truck, and watch the flow, when you pump out about 3-4 quarts, stop and top off the transmission, then repeat. Keep doing this till you can see the new fluid coming out, it is bright red, and not dark red like the old fluid. Then just re-attach the line, and top back off.
