ATP Oil Pan cover really quieted idle noise

I was pretty amazed at how much quieter my 05 Ram is now.

Still has plenty of diesel noise, but definitely a db or two lower now (my eardrum guestimate, no instruments involved).

Previously I installed an ATP (Advanced Thermal Products) Valve cover blanket which effectively eliminated almost all the valve clatter. Pleased with that I decided to splurge on another ATP product.

Yesterday I installed the Oil Pan Blanket (twice as expensive as the Valve Cover Blanket) and now most of that idle/stopped/slow speed rattle / clanging is gone.

At Hwy cruising speeds I now think most of the in-cab noise is wind...



I certainly concur with other endorsements of ATP products for noise reduction.

I also want to buy their valve cover blanket, oil pan cover and underhood liner

While noise reduction would be good, think what it does for oil temps. While the heat loss thru the oil probably isn't great now its insulated. Good in winter, bad is summer when towing.

Why would Oil Temp be an issue? I run Synthetic. Oil PRESSURE is important of course.

Shouldn't most "cooling" of oil be associated with Engine Radiator/Fan/Coolant "cooling"?

I suppose the Engine/Cooling Temp might get very slightly elevated over long periods of use. As I recall from long ago Thermodynamic studies, ideally, an engine would have no heat loss. However, material / component issues like inefficiencies and MELTING points prevent the ideal. As ATP indicates on their website, their products "increase thermal efficiency of the engine".

I believe I've read the 2011 engines have insulation in their oil pans to reduce noise?

I've got both the valve cover blanket and the oil pan blanket. Both great products. Quiets the beast quite a bit, but no mistaking it for a 6. 7!!

Cat tried it with the 3406 truck engines, the issue becomes corrosion between the cover and pan.



Road treatment chemicals get in beween the two and work the magic.



In your part of the world you'll be fine.

Up here I wouldn't do it.

Oil pressure and temperature are directly related! Also oil breaks down faster at higher temps.

As far as pressure I have seen oil pressure go from 55 to 43 on a pull up a hill at the same rpm, purely from temp increase. . with full synthetic oil.

I'll pull mine off and inspect. I'll also pull a dB reading while it's on the lift. I'll have to get my hands on the same stainless steel wire that comes from ATP before I reinstall. Maybe I'll run awhile without it to see how much of a sound difference it made. It's been on for several years, now.
