Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) ATS 3 piece exhaust

I just installed the unit. I have noticed that the turbo whistle I use to have got quiet. I stll hear it but it is not as pronounced.

Power seems to be the same. I don't have a boost gauge and wish I did. I cant see or hear any exhaust leaks. All my hoses are tight. Has anyone else noticed this kind of change? I guess my next purchase will be the pyro and boost gauges.

About the only thing I can think of is if your original manifold was warped, maybe some of the sound you were hearing was the exhaust squealing out of one of the leaking gaskets, while under boost. I can't say I've noticed any of my installs making lesser noise, but that may be due to the fact that I wasn't listening to it before the install.

Question, did you get the replacement gaskets at the stealers or from a Cummins dealer?

Reason for question, I went to the stealer, one of several here in San Diego and they had some that were silvery coloured and very 'cheesy' looking for about $2. 50 USD each. I went out to Cummins Cal in El Cajon and got a set of gaskets, multi layer metallic and greenish in colour for $50. 00 USD.

Being a retired wooden boat builder and not a diesel mechanic I was impressed bye the second type and alarmed bye the first type from the stealer. Installation was done bye a small outfit near El Cajon along with a Piers 35 turbo, 180 injectors( up from 160s, its an auto and I am being very careful with that thing).

The ATS was also supplied bye Piers and I had Piers supply it Ceramic Coated . I was polilte and kept my mouth shut and Tom let me watch the whole installation. No real problems and I am happy with the performance of my truck for the first time since buying it new in 11/94, 1995 Model year.

The gaskets I bought were from the Dodge Dealer. They were only

$0. 75 each. They looked exactly the same as the ones that came out. I did not get the cermatic coating for the manifold to save on money. I don't see the engine with the hood down so who cares what it looks like. It could be pink with blue dots. Just as long as it worked right. My turbo sound came back after a 100 miles . I think the 3 piece unit had to seat it self in. There was some problems getting it to align with the bolt holes. My old manifold was cracked and warped. I had no good surface to pop the manifold together properly. I will be installing a boost gauge and egt in another month. I beleave that It should be at least 15 to 20 lbs of boost with the stock engine. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

With a load, I could pull 18-19 pounds of boost with my stock 180 pump. I think those numbers are accurate, that was a long time ago
