Been doing some thread searching on this devise used with the 48re and would like to confirm with those that have one. .

Is this scenario true with this setting-

Commander set to lock @ 30mph and the OE OD switch is on. .

While slowing down from above 50 mph where it is locked in OD, the transmission will not down shift correctly out of OD and into drive??

I have a commander on mine ,see sig, and mine does same thing. I dont think they have it designed to take you out of over drive, electronicaly, when you slow down to a certain speed it is just left up to the factory program as far as that is concerned. We just didnt notice it before because the T/C unlocked as soon as we let off the gas. The transmission is doing what it always has but now it feels like we are going to kill the motor cuz the T/C is locked. So I just hit the button on the shfter when I get to 40 or so and let it do its thing. Thats the setting I use on mine to it seems to work the best for stop and go driving. I have 47re but I think "hope" this will help.

I am looking at a Commander diagram for the 2003-2004 Rams and see they tap into the OD switch circuit. . anyone know why?

Just curious to learn more on this unit.

Locking @ 30 under accel seems fine but holding lock AND in OD a real low RPM's during decel seems wrong.

The ECM on the 3rd genners must be different from the 2nd gen trucks. Locking up at any speed in O/D under 35 MPH would set a t-code on my 99. The ECM would give you five lockups under 35 before it would throw a code. As long as I was in 3 (drive) I could lockup at any speed or any gear with no worries.

On the back of your Commander you have what are called "Dip" switches, depending on where they are set will effect the programing of the Commander unit as they relate to TC lockup and at what speed. I would call Will at ATS if you have a particular TC operation in mind. The Commander is truly a remarkable little goodie and is capable of doing many different things.

Will spent hours on their dime helping me with the 99.

Mac

Check the dip switches, for correct OD setting, Also the OD button is the answer. It will say lockup to the set MPH. Make sure you set for lockup when shifting to OD.

Thanks for the info guys. .

Actually I don't have a Commander but wait before you roll your eyes cuz I really wanted to know about its operation to help me decide on which way to go on a trans upgrade.

With the ATS way I get into early lock up and take advantage of the triple loc.

But am concerned that as I slow down below 50 from what I have read it will hold lock up in 4th clear down to idle speed, don’t think I would want that nor would like the idea of switching on/off the OD button every time I drive to stop that which is why I posted.

With the competitions way I get more tight fluid coupling and can let the trans control lock as it does normally. I like that way too but don’t like it unlocking at WOT.

In various driving conditions I do, and paying attention to how either way I go on this would work for me I found times where lock up under power at 30 would be nice.

I don't want to turn my auto into a push button operation, I will lock out OD on down hills for some engine braking sometimes and also while towing but other than that I want it to function as an auto. . guess I am lazy.

I will give ATS a call on this, its just the sales people are so biased its hard sometimes.

The 2 posts on The Commander that got me to wonder was these:

The biggest complaint I have is that it doesn't downshift form overdrive to drive and will lug the engine if I don't turn off OD. It really sucks having to turn OD on and off all the time. But, with my minor performance mods, I'm told it is needed. I am just dealing with it, but not happy about it.

I have it set to lock on the middle setting, which causes lock-up around 37MPH, and (more importantly) unlocks from 4th gear right at 750RPM.

Thanks again!

Matt
