I have an 05 diesel with the 48 re and i just ordered the ats five star converter because of the excessive slippage i feel after adding a six gun and 35 inch tires. Anyone had experience with this torque converter or any solutions?

before you start making anymore power, i would start thinking of a trans re-build, the input-shaft will be next to break and if it does it can take out that new converter and make a mess of things, i have heard of guys breaking them with just a box.

At minimum the TC should be supported with VB and commander or co-pilot.

Got that right. Get a better TC, and the extra torque that will be transfered will cause the clutch packs in the trans will slip. Need more pressure to hold the plates together.

ATS 5-Star converter

Kevin - I have the ATS 5-Star converter and believe it's a top notch converter. However, I have the ATS trans with billet input and their billet flexplate and mine is just a 2wd. I feel the same as the others who posted about doing it right the first time. The 5-Star is a much tighter converter than stock and I think at least a valve body,(it ups the internal pressures to keep the clutch packs from slipping) and possibly ATS's trans controller is in order here, (I have the Commander controller and I believe they call the controller a CoPilot now). I had followed the various transmissions threads for a long time before I decided to bite the bullet and get the whole deal, (trans, billet input, flexplate, controller plus other billet parts if you have the 4wd). I read too many reports of broken flexplates, input shafts and other stuff when the power is turned up, especially those launching under significant boost with 4wd. just my 2 cents - I hope it all works out for you. Bill

My daughter had a ATS transmission setup including a commander and torque converter. Good performance when everything is set up correctly; however, in your case I'd strongly suggest you also get a commander to go with the torque converter.

Alright thanks guys. Yeah i always like to do things the right way the first time but its a slow process with my pay. Im getting there.

I just had a quote for $4,366. 00 installed, without the billet shaft - just ATS T/C, Valve Body and Co-pilot
