My '03 Ram's Torque Convertor just started slipping at 126,000 miles. I have the HO with the 48RE Transmission and I'm running a Banks Power PDA with HP/Torque around 350/720 max. I'm not doing a lot of heavy pulling, it's mostly just a highway truck, but I plan to keep it for another 500,000 miles or so. Any advice on replacing just the Torque Convertor, or should I be considering a complete transmission? Is there something out there besides ATS or Sun Coast that I should be considering? I'd appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

there are a lot of converters out there and I think you will get many opinions. I personally am lookin at the ATS 5disc. I read about it in TDR magazine and it sounds great. COuple people on DTR love theirs.

Dave Goerend of Goerend Brothers Transmissions. You absolutely will not be able to beat his customer service - and oh yeah, he knows these trannies as well as anyone. He won't sell you a generic transmission or converter. He will spend as much time on the phone with you as needed to determine your specific needs and get you the parts that are right for YOUR truck.

After much research I went with the Goerend brothers VB & TQ. I drove to Daves shop located in St lucas Iowa. Great product and super folks to deal with. I arrived at 5:30 am thursday morning and Dave was already in his shop working. They took my truck in at 9:00 am thursday and it was finished by 4:30 pm that afternoon. I can,t say enough how well I was treated by Dave Goerend. I am very happy so far with the TQ and VB,its like driving a different truck now. coobie :D

Given that you got 126k out of the stocker, I would guess your pretty easy on the old girl. IMHO a quality single disk seems like it would be enough for you but the choice is yours. All the big boys, Suncoast, Georend, DTT, ATS, and some others (I think) make quality stuff. Choose the product based on the installers you have available to you. The best transmission in world isn't worth two craps in a bucket if the install is botched. DONT use a generic transmission shop, use someone that KNOWS diesel trannies.

My 06 automatic seams to shift a lot?

I notice at 45 to 50 the automatic wants to shift a lot. Don't seam to postive to me. Is that normal with this trans. I only have 1200 miles on the new truck. My 95 Dodge diesel has a automatic but was rebuilt my Dave Goerend last year and what a difference. The tourque converter that he put In the 95 has 3 bands now I see some tourque converter   has 5 is that correct what I am reading?I have not pulled a trailer as yet but an installing a transmission temp gauge to be safe. What good is a transmission cooler if you don't know the temp of the oil. Down the road I will have Dave do the transmission on the 06 to be safe. Any of you had trouble with the 06 transmission?

You have Banks stuff already get a Banks Torque Convertor, Which may be tune for your Banks PDA already.

Why? I wouldnt go with a company that only sells TC's. They arent a transmission shop! At a minumum a TC VB upgrade is perfect for this application at hand in my book. The only way to match a TC VB to the motor is by HP and peak TQ at RPM most transmission companies can match up the HP TQ as well as banks probably because they know more about them!

I enjoy reading these trans threads, did it ever surface who is now building the converters for DTT?

Who sells a tight multi-disc converter? Seems like that would be a good upgrade for towing in lock up at low RPM's without increasing pressures while providing better fluid coupling when out of lock up.

Goerend does!! It is called a 10 bladed stator. It is available in any flavor, single disk, single disk billet cover, and triple disk billet cover. The convertor is perfect in my opinion.

I love my Suncoast. Great people to deal with and quality product.

With that many miles, I would consider a complete rebuild. Obviuosly you aren't in the HP wars, so you don't need any shafts or anything fancy. I do think you need to have the clutches ans steels replaced along with the seals and such. Just good maintenance. Why do it halfway? A quality rebuild will last you 2-3 times a stocker if treated the same way.

I just put a DTT transmission upgrade in my 03,they are very helpful up there, thing shifts awesome,I would recommend going through and replacing about all of it,because if youre like me once you get started on the power theres no end to it,and if you just do youre converter that wont be enough down the road
