Had my transmission rebuilt on my 01 2500 cummins by ATS last July. Stage three job and I like it except for a couple of things. It Shifts very hard into 4rth gear especially when pulling my 5th wheel trailer and every once in a while when the truck is cold it will act like it pops into neutral. I've called Ats about it and they said that it sounds like the transmission filter is loose so it's not picking up the fluid. It's happened in reverse and 1st gear. They also said that the pressure can be turned down when I service the transmission next time. I've had a few issues with ATS and am not sure if what they are telling me is true or not. Do any of you have any thoughts?

Mine shifts hard in to 4th and I think it mainly is caused by it always being in lock up when it occurs. As far as yours popping out of gear it sounds like possibly your shift linkage is loose. Could be the filter being loose but when it does it go to neutral then back into gear and see if it go into gear firmly the 2nd time.

You better check your fluid level

Remember to check it hot on level ground in neutral and not in park.

Thanks for the input. I know it's not the linkage. When it goes into neutral I can throttle up some and it goes back into Ist and then it doesn't do it again. I'll check the fluid level again but was fine last time I checked.

Boy were you right. I've checked it once before but just after the transmission was rebuilt. Haven't checked it since because there were no leaks. But I was down atleast a quart when hot. Added one quart. We'll see if that was the problem. Like my first auto mechanics teacher in high school used to say. "Check the simple things first. " Duhhh. Thanks, bgoodale
