Hello all

1998 CTD auto just got an ATS v/b and t/c, and now it wont shift into OD. Also there is a engine surge between the 2-3 shift, before it goes into 3rd gear.

Is the OD controlled by the TPS? Would the 2-3 shift be the TPS also, or would this be a band adjustment or something else?

Engine was replaced with a 215 5 spd engine with a #11 plate, but the TPS and linkage from the auto engine was put on.

Thanks to any help.

Eric

Does your truck have the 11 pin connector harness to plug in to? If that is not connected, no OD or lockup. But as was mentioned earlier, I would call ATS when they open tomorrow and ask them about it. I'm sure they will be able to help.

take a pressure test off the OD section port should be about 100 psi. If lower the od piston seal could be bad. If it is run like that long the clutches will burn.

Try messing with that little rheostat and it's associated wiring... and if that doesn't help... shift it locked-to-locked... . then you won't have any operational hard parts in the transmission to worry about! (kidding!)

Matt

Have you received any help on this yet?

If not can you describe the 2-3 shifting problem in a little more detail?

Are you saying the truck accelerates in 2nd gear and during the 2-3 shift, the engine revs up a few hundred rpm as if it were in neutral and then third gear grabs?

If so, I've had that problem before. It's a common failure when putting an aftermarket valvebody on a stock transmission. ATS should know all about it and I'm sure they will help you get it fixed.

If not, let me know and we can walk through it together.

ATS said that if the ignition was turned on without the transmission in the truck it may have set the program to a default that doesnt allow od or lock, this is being checked tonite. Guages were put in with the transmission out, so we hope this is it.

2-3 shift there is an engine speed increase between gears, yes something like neutral. transmission was rebuilt before ATS upgrades, may be an adjustment on our end, also being checked tonite.

Thanks to all, will update.

Eric

Test drive tonite showed transmission to be shifting ok from 1-2 and 2-3, but when "od off" lite is on, rpm is lower than when when "od off" lite is off. Seems to be using od backwards??

Still no clutch lockup.

A diagnostic reader showed TPS voltage too high, at 1. 5. Someone have links to this problem, I know I have read it here before.

Thanks

Eric

If you do a search for TPS voltage you'll get a whole bunch of info... Glad you got some of the bugs worked out. . . . I'm sure someone with Transmission Knowlege will comment soon.

Darren

A TPS with an idle voltage of 1. 5 wouldn't cause these problems.

The first thing you need to do is check the wiring to the valvebody. Make sure the PCM is actually grounding out the OD and lockup wires. Do you have a service manual to find out which wires to test?

The other thing to do is run a set of pressure checks. Check line pressure first to get a baseline and then check front accumlator release pressure in third gear. They should be within 3 psi.

Keep us posted,

Chris

We have been in contact with ATS and they have emailed schematics and spent phone time helping to get this transmission working properly, still doing more tests.

Have compared new TPS readings with old one and they are pretty close, still not shifting right. Going to do pressure tests next.

At least with this truck we will learn about how to fix some problems, that hopefully will help others later;)

Thanks again to ATS for the help!
