Im looking to buy a full billet transmission and am wondering if Ats is as good as they propose. I really like the five year 500k warranty idea but i dont want to take it in several times for small problems either. Anyone know who makes the best and if their prices are comparable to Ats?

iv had an Ats transmission for the last 3 year and have put 30k on it and love it. have not had any problems with it. for whats its worth.

You need to check out DTT Performance. They've pioneered many of the advances made in transmissions for our trucks. Those include custom valve bodies, and billet parts. The critical thing with the internal components in transmissions is strict adherence to detail, clearances, and strength. Their function is to keep fluid pressure loss to a minimum so that power produced by the engine makes it to the rear meals. DTT'S customized build is what sets them apart. They are a family business well known for honesty and quality products. Their 800# is 866-504-4002. They will ask you questions about how you want to use your truck, i. e. , racing, street, towing, if towing how much weight is towed, etc. , and how your truck is currently set up. After asking the questions they will make some recommendations on what they think will best meet your needs, as well as additional options that you can consider. You can spend as much as you want, but they will actually be honest in their recommendations. They customize the valve body to meet your specific requirements. Check out their website and take a look at the parts going into the transmission and why their TCs, Valve Bodies, and Transmissions set them apart from other products. They are great about answering questions.

Good Luck, Skip

X2 on that. Every transmission is built to order. Give them a call and they'll have answers and authorized installers in your area. DTT is like the Smarty, you rarely hear anything negative about it. Get an installer that is closeby.

I am a DTT fan as well,a word of advice no matter who you go with have them start with a new valve body as the valvebodies are prone to wear. A worn V/Body when modified will end up giving you head aches

Scott----Regarding ATS Transmissions. They produce a good product. However, imo DTT produces a better product for about the same price. I did a lot of internet searching regarding transmissions, TCs, and valve bodies. I talked with people who I trusted, and was told to call DTT. I called, asked questions, and learned a lot about transmissions, TCs and valve bodies. In fact, I called quite a few times with questions that might seem pretty stupid to a transmission expert. I always got patient and professional responses. I don't have a lot of money and wanted to make sure I spent wisely for a product that would hold up a long time while pulling a heavy load. I also talked to local transmission shops, and they pretty much scared me away.

Take your time, call the 800#s for the different custom transmission builders and ask a lot of questions regarding your needs and application.

A friend and fellow transporter had an ATS transmission rebuild done, against my advice, in the '05 Ram he owned at the time. This is what he told me:

The ATS was never right, would set a code on every mountain grade and go into the limp mode. Apparently the ECM/PCM sensed slippage in the TC and set the code to protect the transmission.

ATS tried for a while to fix it in several shops around the country including their home shop in CO but never succeeded. They cut him loose with a truck that couldn't pull trailers. He lost so many loads and so many paychecks due to his ATS he went broke, had his truck repo'd, and filed BK.

I never owned one. I had a DTT built by James Northrum in Midlothian, TX southeast of Dallas. It was bullet proof. I put over 100k miles on it towing heavy and very heavy trailers.

I've read lots of criticism of ATS transmissions on the websites. Do your homework before you decide.

I really appreciate the help guys. My only concern is if i break a shaft. Just hope i dont have to start all over if i do its alot of money. Im sure you all know that tho.

I just had an ATS trans installed in my 03 dually. Like everyone says call and discuss what you have and what you are going to do with the truck. I chose ATS due to the time they took to talk with me about my truck and what I use it for and the 5 year 500,000 mile warranty. I have pulled my 40foot gooseneck with it but not far yet. I am very happy with it. I also got a super deal for paying cash and got it in and out of the shop in CO in 1 day, promised and delivered! I've heard good and bad about pretty much all trans shops. All I can say is do a lot of homework, none of them are cheap when you add all the parts into the picture. Good luck and shop wisely.

After much research and deliberation, I personally am going to go DTT even though it means traveling a pretty good distance away. My only experience with ATS is a mediocre one at best so I simply have no reason to do business with them again.

How many miles would a Valve Body need to have before you would consider it worn?

Just curious, have you wandered down to Griffin and talked to Jeff Garmon.

No knock on DTT as they build QUALITY stuff. Just easier sometimes to have somebody local to take it to if there is a problem.

I know a guy that uses ATS transmissions as paper weights. (seriously)

I have had DTT in both of my CTD and love them. Bob Berends is the Colorado Dtt man, and is a great guy to work with.

------>If you are near or in Georgia I vote for Jeff Garmon as well. He rebuilt my ATS transmission after I took out my input shaft which is a whole other story in itself.

Jeff is a great guy, taking the time to give me a personal shop tour and a very detailed insight on his transmission rebuilding process. They have recently started doing thier own converters as well. His place isn't one of the huge mega stores but he more than makes up for it in the personal attention, quality and service he provides. Oo.

[/quote) I did the local thing keep it USA close to home ya da ya da first time went DTT after a lot of research trans was Great had a warrenty issue outside of Denver trans had to be R and R'd I was down less than 24hr's no question's no charge 200k later sold truck still running strong had my 06 rebuilt at 160k had vavle body issue's took truck to installer several time's just a big circle jerk ended up stuck in colarado springs for two days needless to say next time I expect to go back to DTT they have installer's all over. Sometimes the fancy, colorful, full page advertising is enticing and finding a vendor/builder/installer that is real close to home is attractive but ultimately many folks learn that what really matters is quality parts, skilled assembly, and service after the sale.

Bill Kondolay of DTT is a demanding perfectionist. His components are the best he can build and he demands only the best builders around the country to represent him.

I have not heard or read one single complaint or criticism of DTT transmissions. The one I had was worth the price I paid.

Do a search on ats on TDR or any other website and make an informed decision. I was caught up by their flashy adds also and chose the VB and 5 star. That thing was rated at 2K tq and my truck was no where near that and mine started acting up after close to 2 yrs. I was on here for advice and listened to all the criticism on ats and decided it was probably a mute point to try and retrieve any warranty... so I just purchased a Goerend and have been very happy with it. I need my truck and didn't have time to deal with all that crap associated with shipping and wasted time only for them to tell me it wasn't covered.

I should talk to Jeff... thanks for bringing that up! He is a lot closer and I have yet to hear anything bad about his transmission builds. Should have thought about him before...

It has been ten years of more since I last visited with Jeff, due to a move. Jeff is a FIRST CLASS act and a real humble builder.

How do you get old of him these days?
