Just picked my truck up from ATS 303-431-7973. I just had the new triple put in. I don't have alot of miles on it yet, but it sure feels good. I'm not sure what stator they put in but it sure pulls hard of the line.

I tried to slip the clutchs by forcing lock up at 1500 RPM's through 2100 RPM's they dont slip instead they snap together like a firm shift.

Tomarrow I will play around more and give more details

Kgoode, when you take off from a stop what are the RPM's doing? Do they jump up to 2000 RPM real quick, or do they build up off of idle?

Was your lockup test on a flat road or up a grade? I know you have plenty of those where you live.

Strick-9

Last Dyno was 380 HP and 833 lb of torque that was on BD's mustang dyno, that was also with an open differential.

VB pressures are 96 psi at idle and 140 psi wot.

Fred, Off of idle rpm will jump to approx 1400 rpm.

Last night I tested on flat ground, today I tested going up hills still no slippage even forcing lockup in O/D at 1500 rpm's just alot of black smoke at that rpm. Tomorrow I will be towing a 12000 lb trailer over Eisenhower pass, that should be good test.

Wasn't it stated in the other threads that VB line pressure was left stock with this new convertor? It sounds like a shift kit was installed.

Fred,

I think their point is now well their lockup system works, even with stock line pressure. I doubt a upgraded VB hurts anything. They are claiming no need for a VB or PressureLoc to work with your exhaust brake in order to have clutch holding power. No need for a upgraded VB to improve lockup under power, etc. -- To me they made it sound like all you needed was their TC and that was it. You could get a VB for firmer shifts if you wanted, but thats about it.

-Fred.

Think about this long and hard. Stock line pressures and a lockup, even if it did hold all the power is going to cause downstream effects to other transmission components. In other words, something is going to give.

With any system, you keep upgrading driveline components to weed out the weak links. Something I've done for years with rock crawler trucks where high HP/torque and ultra low gearing are a deadly match.

How do you know what to upgrade next? It's the part that breaks next.

Kgoode, in a previous post back in August you posted you had an ATS transmission installed. What happened to that transmission? In this post you state you just picked your truck up. Is it the same truck?

96 psi at idle, yikes! You must like the major clunk into gear.

Did you ask if it was a milled stator? With the RPM you stated from takeoff, it sounds like a milled stator.

Back on 8-27-01 I did pick my truck up from ATS with one of their transmissions and a BD dual clutch Converter. As of this date it is the same transmission just a different converter. The reason it is in their shop was for a broken us gear O/d, not the TRANSMISSION OR THE B/D CONVERTER, just a customer that wanted to try a different converter, is there anything wrong with that?????

Besides originally in this topic we were talking about a triple disc converter not transmissions.

Before you or any body wants to talk S**T about new products maybe you or they should do some research on the product or maybe even the company that promotes these new items.

BTW I’m just a customer not a transmission specialist, it would be my suggestion if you are that curios about my transmission and T/C you should call ATS at 303-431-7379!!! Thanks Kevin.

How much for that converter Kevin? Fred is getting a bit conserned here. Everybody take a chill pill with a beer. We are not going to tear up the new people because their not Bill. If you want, lets start another thread and we will tar and feather BD and set them on fire. Then we can **** on their ashes. Dang it there I go again.  :( Chug, chug... ... . chill pill down. :D better... . LOL. PLAY NICE THIS TIME!!! There will be no bad mouthing ATS untill they suck consistantly. :) Put on some easy music or something. Keep the chill pills near the computer at all times! :D :D

Kgoode, I would suggest you re-read the post. Nowhere in my post am I flaming anyone's new product. I am merely asking questions, and last time I checked that was okay.

The pattern I do see is that as soon as someone questions a product from this company, people start getting defensive. The same thing happened in the original thread which I remember you stated you had a new transmission put in.

Don't go beating up on people for asking questions. Usually I like to see questions asked about more specifics about a new product. Not just how much, but understanding it's benefit.

I deal with multiple products, and when something new comes out, and I have a question I ask. That's what this forum is for. It's not for taking out your frustrations, so please refrain from abusing someone for merely asking questions.

Since my original post on the triple disc converter from ATS I've logged 3800 miles, of those miles approximately 1000 of them I towed a trailer that weighed from 10. 000 lb to 14000 lb. So far the lock up clutches have not slipped even when I’ve tried to make them slip by forcing lock up at low rpm’s . What I did find is when you force lock up on slick roads the back of the truck likes to side step a little with the trailer. I did have a vibration occur last week, thinking it was in the transmission we pulled the transmission pan to look for any debris but there was none. I had a new locker put in the rear few weeks ago so that was the next place to look for the vibrations when pulling the shafts out I noticed wear marks on one side of the axle indicating a bent axle. I pulled them both and they’re both bent, maybe the next weak link in the drive train. I think in the near future I will have a higher stall speed stator put in that should help with the turbo lag at this altitude. I think if these lock up clutches are this strong then a bigger rpm drop between lock up and fluid coupling will not hurt them.

Kevin

Bent axles?

Kevin;

Your signature doesn't state 4x4. Do you by any chance have a 2wd with a Dana 70 rear axle?

A local performance seeker told me that the Dana 80 is the only axle to have if you start upping the hp.

What type of locker did you add? I have an open spool and while it be nice for highway cruising, a locker would be nice for some traction on these snowy/icy winter roads.

thanks

-John

JohnE. I do have a 4x4 with a Dana 70 with a 3. 54 ratio.

I installed a power trax locker, it does let you get the power to the ground but can be a little squirrely on ice. I chose the power trax for ease of installation, as for strength I guess time will tell. Hopefully the dana 70 axle problem will be fixed next week with a set of mark williams axles.

Kevin.

A mechanical locker is the worst thing for icey conditions. The rear or front will side straight sideways when traction is lost.

This is where the higher priced air lockers like ARB's come in very handy. On icey conditions, you tend to not lock them as much.

KGoode, do you have any kind of locker in the front? Just curious how you deal with icey roads in Colorado.

JohnE, I have several friends from Minnesota, and for the road, ARB's rule. Get in the goo, and mechanical lockers are simpler and effective. Too many times I've seen guys forget to hit the switch to lock the front or rear with the ARB's.

Icy roads in CO are not a big deal. I used to have a Mustang, never once could I not drive it in winter. I moved to NE and it just was horrendous. CO does a good job of handling the weather for the most part, and usually the snow melts the next day. Thats one thing I truel miss about living there.

Fred, no locker in the front, it would be near impossible to steer on icey roads, its hard enough with one in the back but does make it fun to drive compared to an open diff
