Dilema: Want to upgrade my auto transmission due to hauling a 12k 5th wheel. Goerend Brothers has a HD transmission for around 3k plus installed. I have a shop here in Springfield Oregon called Dunks that carries the ATS transmission for 5k installed. Dont know much about either but both are suppose to be good. GB is in Iowa and I am in Oregon. Around a 4k mile trip. Even with the mileage it would be cheaper to go to Iowa but dont understand the price difference. Anyone have any feedback on either of these trannys.

Thanks

Bob

where are you located at just wandered.

the different should be convertor maybe and then the shaft for 5K I would think it would have at least billet input shaft and a triple loc convertor and valve body

but I not sure never dealt with ethier company I had a local shop rebuild mine once for 2800 they only put vavle body shift kit in and new clutches and hd convertor then now I had HTS do it and have over 5k in it with 89% triple lock red clutches had to get a new pump in it my old one broke and billet input and output shaft.

unfornutely it does not come with a billet shaft. Actually neither does for that price. For billet with ATS adds another grand. Not sure with goerend bros. Had a shop say they could rebuild mine with HD TC for around 2600 but not sure about that either. Dont want to run into problems later and have to still put in dinero

they are all good buildiers I had a buddy have a goerend bros he like it on his 99 he was running only 350 hp though so not sure how it held up he towed big trailier with it too couple time a month he even pulled a renegade enclosed double decker for hauling two cars at once. I went with HTS Transmissions one they are only 2 hours from were I live and I have seen there trannys take alot of punishment most of the guys around here that have them in there trucks drag race them or pull and the other are pushing 500 + hp and the trannys don't care

But what ever one you decided to go with make sure to go triple loc tc and a good vavle body that will make a great difference in the life of the trans and how it handle everyday use.

Good luck on your decision

You don't have to go all the way to Dave's shop to get one of his trannys. Call Dave and ask him if he's got an installer in your area. I got mine in Riverdale, CA from Richard Brown.

One thing for you to look at, which warranty is better. I already know the answer to this, I suggest you ask both GB and ATS.

I know of several of Daves trannies that are surviving at the 600HP mark sled pulling. It is 1 fewer since Bobcat698 broke his.

You have to remember though Dan, I can break anything, so my transmission breaking doesn't count.

You can give me anything "unbreakable" and I will break it with "normal" use :-laf

All that aside, I would HIGHLY reccommend giving a hard look at the Goerend Brothers product. Their service is top notch, as is there warranty.

There were no questions asked about "what I was doing" to have broken the parts I did, but of course I told Dave anyway, and there was no question whether the parts would be warranteed.

The 99 has a suncoast VB and a Goerand 3 disk. The 95 has a full Goerand including shafts. The Suncoast shifts like crap very firm and harsh. The Goerand just flat out goes. I never believed he could build that strong of transmission with smooth shifting. It's not that it's laggy shifting as it will chirp the tires, it is just smooth. Goerand is cheaper, has a much better warranty, Dave is probably the best vendor I have ever had to deal with which includes a lot in the car market. I can't say enough. I have had several race built trannys in my cars and never have I felt one I like this much not to mention all the fast cars I have been in or driven. Stop asking questions call Dave.

Live in Eastern PA. , found a local diesel shop to change out trans. $450. 00 and four days,Dave sent trans to shop with return crate and freight prepaid. TAlked to shop before install and also didn't charge me a core. Iowa is not really that far it seems. CAll him, he may know someone near you. After you talk with him you'll feel like you have known him for years. Can't say enough good things about my experience with him. :)

I drive by ATS every day to work, been in there a few times, met a few guys, and Clint the owner is a stand up guy. HOWEVER, after talking to Dave Goerend on the phone, I was completely convinced he was the man I wanted to do business with. Bought all the parts from him and tore it apart in my driveway. Dave helped me put it all back together over the phone. Its been a year and a half and I hammer it daily and tow a 5th wheel once a month. Never a problem and its a kick to drive every time. Like ttbird said- CALL DAVE and be straight with him, he'll be straight with you.

Call Dave, then call another vendor and tell them you are going to rebuild your own transmission using their parts. I know one of the vendors will give you the smoke and mirrors tour, special tools, vulcan mind meld, act of god, all of these are required to do it, as well as scare you into this upgrade and that upgrade. Dave will tell you how it is.

Wow, I respect all the response... and I had already had a incling to go with GB. I like the price and have heard nothing but great stuff . The vendor for ATS really didnt give a warm and fuzzy for a possible 5k sale. I will call him tomorrow and see if there is a vendor near me in Eugene. If not its an excuse to get away for awhile. Thanks again for all the great feedback.

I just ordered a transmission from Dave. I did a search on Geoerend trannys and emailed Dave several times. I ordered a transmission for my 94 Dodge 4x4 that is going behind a 408 gas engine. I know if he can build a transmission that holds up behind a Cummins, it will hold up behind the 408. I was impressed with the price, warranty and conversation with Dave. Luckily, I am only 2 1/2 hours away from his shop and will be headed up within the next 5 days to get my transmission. I will keep you posted after I get it installed.

I finally got a chance to 'race' my GB transmission. I literally did not feel it shift until I manually shifted it into fourth (47RH). It was totally sweet. No regrets.

HTS all the way , it really doesn't matter where the shop is they all ship them on a daily basis, and it doesn't cost as much as you think it would (probably cheaper than your fuel to drive for one ). so far I have been throwing 809hp at it every weekend and still going strong , not bad after burning up 3 full blown suncoast in 1 month.
