Someone Tried to steel my truck last night. They broke out the steering column and in the process destroyed the ignition switch. They couldn't get it started but now I can't either. I was looking at what was left of the switch and was wondering if I could unplug the harness from it and make some jumper wires between the proper terminals and start the truck. I need to get it running because it is my only form of transportation.

If you prefer PM me so everyone can't see how to do it

Thanks Phill

Stroker, sorry for the bad luck, hope the thugs get what they deserve. This isn't the reply you were looking for, but I'd think you could wire the fuel shut-off solenoid up, then short across the starter solenoid to crank it. It'd run untill you dropped the fuelshut-off back down.

Not practical for daily driving, but might allow it to be moved a time or two.

What about the steering wheel lock?

Good luck, RJR

added in edit; I've changed a few ignition switches and it's not a big deal. The nearest locksmith biz will likely have one. Or of couse the dealer. RR

They Destroyed the the steering wheel lock so it can turn. The side of the steering column is so mangled that it looks like it was blown up with a gernade.

If anything, it is probably like a normal key switch. Take a wire tester and find the 12 V source coming to the switch and then you will be able to find you accessory, your main power, and the wire for the starter relay. Sometimes the back of the switch is labeled to tell which is which. You will want to cross the supply to the main power for everything to be on. Then you want to monentary cross the supply with the starter relay to get it started.

1) After testing starter solenoid and relay, test ignition

switch and wiring. Check all wires for opens or shorts, and all

connectors for corrosion or looseness.

2) Remove ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH under REMOVAL

& INSTALLATION. Using an ohmmeter, check ignition switch continuity.

See Fig. 3. See IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY table and IGNITION SWITCH

CIRCUIT FUNCTIONS table.

I found a switch at the local dealer and was able to get it before they closed. After replacing the switch it still didn't start. I found the cause to be the two fuseable links for the ignition were blown. After replacing them the truck came to life. Now I just have to get the damage repaired, Im sure that will be a fun process dealing with the insurance company.

Thanks to everyone that contributed their knowledge.

stoker, make a police report even if you have to do it over the phone this will assure the insurance co. it was a legit break in be sure to get a case # from the P. D.

Sounds like the fusible links were the only thing that stopped your truck from being gone. . yay fusible links

hmm methinks i need to add a kill switch. . hmmmm

I have two theft delay switches. One is in plain sight on my switch panel. It disables the fuel solenoid. The other is hidden. It kills the starter.

heh i like the "theft delay" phrase... comes back to the 'locks are for honest people' thing i guess. . give em enough time, and if they want it bad enough, they`ll get it. . thieves suck. having a dual kill setup is a good idea tho. .

I put an anti-start button on mine and it's hidden in plain sight. Like others have said, if someone wants the truck bad enough, they'll find a way to get it.

Stoker Smoker;

If you do a search on this subject, you'll find quite a bit about how and where to wire. There was also an article in a past TDR publication about these anti-theft projects. If you want you can E-mail me, or most anyone on here that has these systems on their trucks, they can fill you in. But it is hard to stop a tilt-bed from taken your ride.

just my penny's worth.
