Well finally had a chance last night to hook up the Mentor/Genisys scan tool and take it for a test drive. Definitely a neat little gizmo. It has a large color LCD panel and is easy to use. You punch in your vehicle information then it tells you which cable to connect to the port under the dash. Real easy to hook up.
It has 2 operating modes, "OBD-II" and "OEM. " I tried the OBD-II first and was able to monitor:
--Engine RPM
--Vehicle Speed
--Throttle position
--Engine Load
and that's about it. There were no diagnostic test that worked in this mode.
Switching over to the OEM mode resulted in a lot more information:
--Engine RPM
--Battery Voltage
--Oil pressure sending unit voltage
--Coolant temperature
--Air intake temperature
--MAP sensor voltage
--MAP pressure in inches of Mercury
--Vehicle speed
--Water in fuel sensor
--Throttle position
--Calculated engine load
You can highlight and graphically display any sensor in real time. You can record and play back data. You can zoom it in or out.
There are a number of tests as well, such as manually activating the grid heaters, WTS light, deactivate each injector individually (cylinder load test), manipulate the door locks, reset throttle zero point, and a couple others.
You can look at and reset codes, the displayed code will also have a label. I had one code, along with the number it said "ECM Fault. "
A couple minor drawbacks. . . I want to share the pro and the con. . . graphing and displaying numbers is not as instantaneous as I would like, it seems a bit slow, not a real high sampling rate. I believe that can be configured in the setup mode. . . the faster the response, the less recording time you'd have though (memory limitation).
Another drawback is this unit only has the adapters through 1999, so I am going to see what it would take to get them through 2001.
Lastly on the "OEM" mode the vehicle speed was way off, at 50mph it indicated 32, so I don't know what's up with that. Also the Engine load % maxed at 39%, I attribute most of that to my boost module throwing off the calculations.
I am going to address these concerns with the Mac man and see what he has to say... or better yet contact Genysis or Mac Tool tech support for answers.
The guy wants $1800 for the unit, I think it is well worth it. Doing a quick count, it looks like we have 10 or 11 good committments already, so if we can round up a few more guys we should be able to do this!!!
