I just finished a full tank of fuel since I installed the rubber grommet around the 4. 5 hole that I bored in the firewall. This grommet takes up the space between the nose of air induction case and the opening of the hole. It makes a real snug fit, and it also makes it a real clean install.
My driving did not change on this tank, everything was the same, execpt the mileage!! I gained nearly 1 mpg, I checked it twice to make sure that it was correct.
If you have installed the induction system and have not put the grommet around it,,DO IT!!! The grommet is from around the tail lights on the big rigs that have the 4. 5" tail lights. #ad

I didn't notice any sound change, but I did notice a definate boost change. About 1800 rpm's, its like I flip a switch, and she takes off. I'm not talking about a full throttle start, this is on a regular start. If you notice I have the ring out on the turbo, so I would be very disappointed if it did change the sound!!!!!

Rick,

What is your total mileage gain over stock look like now?

Before installing the grommet I was getting 20. 2-20. 5 and yesterdays fillup was 21. 3.
I know what the low numbers are because I keep a log of all the fuel that goes into her. I double checked the log book to make sure of what I was saying. Running back and forth to work it had ran the 20. 2-20. 5. The only thing that had changed was the grommet. Like I said, you could feel the boost come on at 1800. I thought that I was just looking for a difference, but my wife could feel the difference when the boost came in.

I have a Psychotty that I haven't installed yet (haven't had time, and weather has been an issue too)...

I measured the open end of the Psychotty housing, and it was just under 3. 5", so I bought a 3. 5" hole saw. Is this not right? I figured I would find a grommet too, but now I'm hearing 4. 5" and was wondering.

Rob

With the 4. 5" hole you have enough room to adjust the alignment. With the 3. 5" hole, I don't think you are going to be able to get the nose of the system where it needs to be. The 4. 5" hole gives enough room for both, alignment and location, then with the grommet it covers and seals the access space.

RHARVEY, what do you think causes the mileage gain? Maybe the sealing around the snorkel allows the slight pressure in the cowl area to aid turbo spoolup?? Maybe at speed with the ram air effect at the cowl area there is enough pressure to overcome air filter resistance so that there is actually POSITIVE air pressure at the turbo intake. I think this would improve efficiency. Keep us posted!

Vaughn

Vaughn,

Scott and I discussed this theory just after I installed the grommet. We both agreed that maybe a vaccum situation was created from the engine bay through the space around the snorkel. If that was the case, it would rob the air that was needed to go into the induction system. There was a difference from stock air box, but not as efficient as it is now.

Scott had a post back on 6/18 that when he put some rubber trim around the hole, he got vibration across the dash at 2300 rpm's.

Perhaps the type of rubber may be critical. I have some of those grommets. Have to try it on mine. Thanks for the tip Rick.

I put the same 4. 5 rubber taillight seal on almost two months ago. Scott told me he put one on and gained 1psi of boost... but I'm sorry to say I didn't gain any boost or mileage. I am glad I installed it because it sure makes the installation look alot cleaner.

Where are you getting this gromet?

If you don't want to wait for a grommet by mail, just go to NAPA or any good parts store. They have these 4. 5" tailight bulbs for truck applications. The bulb/lense is one unit, bulb burns out, throw it and put in new. The grommet holds the bulb in place within the hole in the truck body. It's been a while since I bought some but the grommet does not cost much.

Put mine in today and then fueled. Forgot to look for a change in boost. Makes the install look cleaner. No change in noise level (not an issue with me) and no vibrations.

I went to a local Semi parts house. The gromet was $1. 85 tax and all. I haven't drove it yet. Tomorrow will be a good test, I'm heading to Las Vegas to the SEMA show and to see Joe D.

Just got back from the SEMA show and I can tell you this gromet is worth a half to three quarters a MPG in milage. Life is GOOD #ad
