Happy B-day **ICEMAN**

Howdy all,

A buddy of mine just bought a car (56 Chrysler New Yorker) on E-bay up in Canada, and he needs to get it home to northern California. I am more than willing to hook Godzilla up to a trailer and bring it on home for him, but the problem is that he can't find a place to rent a car trailer to haul it.

Uhaul and Penske/Ryder claim their trailers won't haul the car - it's too heavy. The car supposedly weighs 4600 pounds, and this is beyond what these companies claim their trailers can safely handle. The car does drive ok, but my buddy doesn't want to try driving it all those miles.

We want a full trailer, not just a dolly type trailer. This will obviously be a one way trailer rental, from northern WA to the Sacramento, CA area. According to Mapquest the trip is 900 miles each way.

The car is in Langley, BC, Canada. We will cross the border on highway 5 according to the directions we have.

If any of you good folks know of a place in that part of Washington that we can rent a hefty trailer from, for a one way trip, I would be most appreciative. We're hoping to go this coming weekend (May 15/16) as I won't have any more free weekends until late June.

Thanks!!

Tom

I've gone to equipment rental places and used one of their trailers. One was a 20' 10k full tilting steel bed, and the other was an 18' 12k wood deck flatbed with ramps. Each were $75/day.

Good luck with it.

"Local" is cheaper than a one way rental. Tow the empty trailer up and bring the loaded trailer down. The extra fuel and tolls ( if any ) will be paid for in the cheaper rate. And the local "rent-all" type places are not networks like U-haul. The importing paperwork will also have to be done before you are held for a few days at the crossing with your cargo ( by our customs people ).

Beware of hauling cargo across the border that does not belong to you. You may be required to make a "formal entry" on the car in tow which means you pay money, hasle etc... Keep in mind Canada is another country and their are very specific laws and regulations when crossing the border. Call customs and find out before you show up with the car.

U-hauls trailers are tanks, give them a different make of car when they ask I guaruntee those bad boys will carry your car with NO problem. Ryder also has decent trailers, not as heavy duty as uhaul but they are a little longer. I put my SRW Chevy 1 ton on one:eek:

Tom I rented a flatbed trailer locally and picked up an old '64 Dodge ex-Navy (9' bed) truck. Just call a commercial too rental company and see. It only ran me about $30/day or so. If you run into border problems, just have the new owner drive the Chrysler across on it's own, then load it on the trailer and head home.

However, since car buyin' season is approaching, you might consider taking a load north from Sacto to Seattle, then returning with the Chrysler. Might pay for half your trip. I seem to remember a place in south Sacto area with trailers available, but can't remember the name. Hope this helps.
