I worked in a body shop about 15 years ago. I have a little rust bubble on my one cab corner. I'm gonna fix it in a week or so and paint the entire bottom of my truck below the moulding.

What is out there today for a mixable chip guard? Last time I painted, it was centari acrylic enamel (yeah its been a while)

Just curious as to what to look for with the new technology out there.

Check out www.autobodystore.com (he has forums to ask questions) They guys running the site is from NJ. As far as the rust goes. . it needs to be converted to stop it from going any further... I think he recomends Pickle X 20. Enamals arent the top chioce anymore... Urethanes are king but they they very toxic. I use a supplied air system to spray anything with isocyates. hope I helped. I guess the old days of spraying with a cigar in my mouth are gone. LOL Thats why I stuck with the acrylic enamel. I dont have a spray booth in my garage and I know the materials now are nasty. The worst I ever remember shooting was that industrial self etching primer.

Thanks for the link.

What about spray on bed liner? Alot of guys are doing that now on the lower portions of their trucks. You could color match the truck, or use a contrasting color. It would be more expensive, but one thing's for sure it would be durable.

Another thought...

In rust repair when you see a bubble under the paint that is the first sign that their is more on the back side of the metal. It is usually about three to four times the size on the inside as on the out side. As J. B. said at the least clean it out and use some rust converter. Pore 15 work's good. 3M makes a good chip guard or SEM also has good products.

Good luck Mike
