I have a DTT VB and TC and I just started getting a what seems to be a double shift between 2nd and 3rd at low speeds (in traffic). . is this normal or do I have something else going out of this wonderful auto trans of mine??? :(

Make some exact observations about what is happening (RPM, MPH, OD in or out, etc. ) then get hold of Bill K.

Keep the truck in OD, not D. Mine was doing it until I did this all the time. It kept it up for a few drives after that, then went away for good. Have not had my truck out of OD for over a year now, and have not had one shifting problem or slipping problem. My transmission fluid stays cleaner looking on inspection after drains and the filter is much cleaner as well since I have been doing this.

The shifting takes pressure to lock in, and if you are in D, then that takes pressure to hold this big spring in the transmission... you only have so much pressure to go around, thus you get a transmission that cant "lock" into a gear. At least this is the way I have it explained to myself in my head. Seems to work with everyone who has followed this advice.

Chad, this problem seems to be directly related to the VB mod. OD has nothing to do with it.

I've been meaning to call my DTT installer, but with a new baby at home, and other things at work I just haven't done it.

But it aint' right... problem is, it doesn't do it every time it goes through the shift progression.

Mine also from 1 to 2nd Ive spoke with Bill K several times . He has had me to drop the line pressures but that seemed to make it worse so bad so it started jumping . as if it was trying to shift to 2nd but kept bouncing back also i lowered pres so much that reverse felt it was sliping not shure it was just felt that way

I uped my pressures back up to where it shifts pretty firm . as to go ahead and get it into 2nd. feels better . I also throttle it more to get it to shift and get it over with at around 1500 to 1700 rpm . If I light foot it at that point the problem is worse.

I too would like an anwser to this . Nothing Ive tried has cleared it.

Towing my 5er (8k lbs) really makes the problem show its ugly head. .

turbo lcc , yours is hunting ??? is it happening when you are light foot on the throttle ? barely off idle running around town ??? who did your install ? possible kickdown cable misadjusted .

oilburner , have you checked the adjustment of the forward band ? this is what is applying on the 1-2 shift . you need to get intouch with your installer to correct this .

chad , you did your own install ... i will guess that leaving it in od is masking a misadjustment on your part . don't get offended , i did the same thing to my truck before i spent a week at bill's shop .

ggreen , who did your install ??? are you using a gauge to set your pressure ? its a frustrating thing to drop your pan a number of times whiule doing it on your back .

I did my own install . Bill K talked me thru step by step . . I have no pres guage . I feel its a little less than as it came out of the box it does not shift with as hard a jolt . The shift points are now lowered also . much to high (1st to 2nd was around 21 - 2200) now is 16 -1800 depending on load. I like the lowered shift points better My cable adjustment is that the little rocker bullet is just out of view when loocking stright across the housing. Ive also tried backing out on the blue locktite bolt in the VB but moved it back in .

I feel that I am close but Its still not Right. I can feel it "shift hunting when coasting down hill at the point where it should shift as the speed picks up it bounces lighily 3 to 4 times before going into 2nd.

When accelrating (pardon this country boys spelling) it shifts good and solid. Maybe I should get a pressure guage , I dont care to buy tools for a one time use only... It feels the pressures are good just from the way it drives with 275inj and a VA boost mod/elbow I have no shuttering as it was stock . Had to unplug the va . . Sorry for long post. . Thanks for any Ideas. .

Hey Guys i just got back from the Texas Rally,

12 days on the road , that was quite a drive , i think i am getting old boys.

One of the main points at my seminar was how to adjust your transmission.

Hunting is the result of a perfect balance between the shift valve and the governor valve. The pcm controls the governor solenoid which controls the shift points.

All trucks hunt , the trick is to find a set up point that does not affect your personal driving habits. That is why Chrysler sets their shift points to be completed into 3rd gear before 9 mph, so you will not notice the hunting as most people do not drive at 9mph or less so you drive right through it.

The kickdown cable (tv cable) controls the down shifts, also it holds the shift longer since throttle pressure works against governor pressure.

In other words the governor pressure forces the upshift. Throttle valve cable forces the downshift. Without a pressure gauge to tell me which way to go it makes the adjustment via phone very difficult.

I taught my guys and my dealears to use a littletrick to help determine whether you need to increase your throttle pressure or increase your governor pressure without having to drop your pan.

This method i will describe is to be used only to diagnose on which way to make the adjustment under light throttle.

Mark your kick down cable so you will have a starting reference point. By moving the kickdown cable back (towards the firewall)= less slack in the cable or less of the bullet showing )

Move the cable at least 1/4 " , if your hunting problem goes away , you need to decrease the mainline pressure and increase the throttle pressure. Remember this is to diagnose only, do not leave the cable like that just because the hunting goes away.

On our web site www.dieseltrans.com

under valve bodies there is a section on how to adjust your pressures.

If you guys want help with the adjustments on your trucks , please have the adjustment page on the website open before you call me, or have your vb instructions on that section handy when you call.

If your shift points under light throttle are really early, what this tells me is that you have too much governor pressure, if your shift points are late under light throttle you have too much throttle pressure.

If you have a pressure gauge , install it on the governor pressure port, see the vb pictorial page 3 on the vb instructions.

If the governor pressure is bouncing up and down on your gauge, you may need to install a new governor solenoid Chrysler part # 4617210

I guess for me these adjustments seem simple because I have done so many of them and i do tend to skipover steps, so i apologise for that ,

Call me if you need any help

Mopar - A Transmission Shop - Excel Transmission installed the VB and my dodge dealer installed the TC.

I will talk with my trans shop and see if they can check these things for me. . They were thinking it was 2nd gear lockup.

The problem is only under lite throttle (traffic- :( ) - I just started noticing it. Thank you all for the help.

Thank You Bill......

It sure is nice to have at least one vendor that will stand behind his product line AND post technical information here that everyone can benefit from. :)

Great thread.

I dont have a TC, VB and a box yet from Bill, but I plan to once my warranty is up and I love Bill's support on the TDR board.

I watch all of these related threads for just this sort of info.

Besides how well members say the Bill's TC and VB work, this support is another reason these items will be bought from Bill K.

nice job Bill. .

I liked this thread so much... I just had to revive it!

Band adjustment: Dear old Dad wants to know the settings... . he's familiar with these adjustments but we've only recently been working on the 47RH's... . anyone???

AND, what else can I do as far as line pressure or other nifty screws to turn while I have the pan off... . just trying to buy time before I call Bill K. and order up the good stuff.

Matt

Bill's and all of his trained installers offer the best service, i had a small prob with my transmission hunting between 2-3 shift, mainly jsut a voltage adjustment but bill k, massdiesel and mopar-muscle all helped me get the voltage and all the adjustments right and now the hunting is gone. thanks again DTT service
