OK Guys... Being I don't have a schematic right infront of me... . What applies when you put the truck in reverse? I have all forward gears, and they all shift normally.

Ok... now as to why I'm asking... .

My buddy decided it would be fun to try and drive through this small swamp by his parents house. He proceeded to get stuck. I go down there with my truck and the 8000lbs Ramsey winch. After hooking it up, letting the winch do it's thing, and stalling the winch out... . the truck was still stuck. I had mine in 4hi thinking it would be easy to pull him out. Well after giving the 'ole truck quite a bit of go pedal, I got him out. Drop it in drive and pull up to a cross street. Reverse... . nothing. Wierd. Try forward, works. Drive it down the street a ways... . and try reverse again. Nothing.

So I have 1-2-3-OD, but no reverse. Is that the rear band?

It's tough to drive anyplace with no reverse. Any advise other than use 4low next time?

If you don't have anything when the shift lever in is 1 it is probably the rear band. If it is ok in 1 then it's probably the overrunning clutch. Either one is going to require a tear down to fix.

Try this, Go for a drive, let it coast, pull shifter to 2 nd, see if it slows the truck, now pull it to 1 st, does it slow the truck?

It must slow the truck in manual 1, if not the band is bad.

If the rear sprag is gone it usually makes a lot of noise.

Have you, or anyone been doing neutral drops? They are real hard on the sprag. Any everything else.

I have no engine breaking at all. No noise that I have heard from the trans. I've driven it about 70 miles since reverse went out. I have the pan off... . I have about 1/4'' of play in the rocker that applies the back band. When I say that, I take it to where it stops in both directions. I have no schrapnal in the bottom of the pan either. I dont' know if the sprag is isolated enough so it can't get parts to the pan or not. Which sprag is used... the one in the OD section or the main case?

Josh

Any other thoughts feel free to call me, I'm getting ready to pull the trans... ... .

I bet you broke, and not burned the rear band. With the pan off you might be able to see it (I don't remember if you can see it with the valve body in place or not). There is also a chance you broke the apply lever for the rear band instead.

If you can still drive it, the sprag is good.

It has to be the rear servo or the band in the front half.

Next idea is the OD section. it has a sprag too. and two sets of clutches. It will turn out to be the direct clutches in the Od.

To get reverse in this trans, here is what applies.

Front clutch, rear band, and direct clutches in the OD section.

So, if you have 3 rd and 4 th, the front clutch is good.

If you believe the rear band is working ok then next is the Od directs. They perform the same objective as the rear sprag in forward gears, but the sprag doesn't work in reverse so the apply the direct clutches.

My first reply wasn't completely correct.

Next time you need to pull someone out of a stuck place. Do it in 4-low. Much easier on the transmission and you can apply power much smoother without breaking things.

Sorry I've been a bit slow getting back on here. I talked with Dave Goerend, we came to the conclusion that it was the 9 clutch pack in the OD section. Sure enough after knocking myself out on monday night removing the rear drive shaft. (Gravity works, and the center hanger bearing is well lubed, and free spinning) I pulled it appart and found that pack burnt up. 2 of the clutches are now steels, and the steels are burnt. After replacment, all is well again in the shifting and reverse depts. Now I have a cooler line that has sprung a leak..... Oh well... what's another project?

Thanks for all your help guys!

Josh

Looks like bad stuff!! Good news is you found the problem. Get it together and get to enjoying the truck again!

Glad to help.
