Left my truck off with the dealer today for the 15,000 mile service. Thought I would have it back by the end of the day. But I was called and told, that while servicing the transmission, metal chunks and so forth were found in the fluid. They are going to rebuild it under warranty. I have been told I will have the truck back by Friday :{ Weird problem since I have done no real towing.

I guess I'm wondering if I should ask them to give me a new transmission? I think I have the 47RE, maybe they can put in the 48RE instead?

I understood trucks ordered after about 15 Dec '02 could have the 48re transmission. Double check the transmission #'s. I waited until Jan'03 (just to make sure I got the 48re) to order our with the 48RE. It arrived in late Feb. Only 10K miles and pulling some weight!

thanks for the responses

I'll have to ask them which transmission I have. I'm a little bummed that I could have this kind of a problem with only 15000 miles.

It may not be as bad as I think though. When I called for status on my truck two days ago, I was told they would not start on the transmission until Monday, but that I could use the truck until then if I didn't drive it very far.

I declined.

thanks again,

This sounds a little reminiscent of the old AANCO routine. I assume it was shifting fine when you took it in?

Just for grins, ask them to show you the parts that came out of it. If it had that much metal in it, there should be a bunch of stuff damaged.

what is the old AANCO routine?

It was shifting fine when I brought it in. They told me there was probably going to be a problem soon...

And thinking of this their offer to take it over the weekend does not make sense.

If they had drained the fluid and found the chunks why would they refill the fluid if they knew they were going to remove the transmission to rebuild it or whatever they are going to do??

And now I'm ranting; why does it take a week to go from seeing a potential problem with the transmission to fixing it?

Maybe I ought to look for a new dealer to service my rig for the next service...

CW, rest assured you are not the only one having problems, I'm sure there is a bunch of people in front of you at the "repair facility" that have the same problems!!

That's what really scares me! A vehicle 6 months old, and only 15000 miles should NOT have a transmission problem.

Anyway found out today my transmission is the 47RE, maybe that has something to do with it... Also found out my gear ration is 4. 1.

Talked to my service adviser this afternoon, he told me parts would be about a week out. Then he called back because they had what ever parts they needed on hand. I may have her back tomorrow evening.

One thing is for sure, if the transmission fails again, I'm pushing for a 48RE.

Depends on how big the shop the shop and area is. Last dealer I worked at had 33 techs and Two full time trans techs. Sometimes we were several days getting to the next car and the trans guys either had none or 6 or 7 each to do. It was a D. C. dealer. Most of the trans work was older autos over 100k on them. Very few under warranty. Worked at a G. M. dealer with 60 odd techs and 4 full time trans techs and 3 full time engine techs.

just an update

Got my truck back Tuesday night. Everything seems fine. I towed about 5000 pounds the same evening. Hopefully the transmission problem was just a fluke.

Thanks for all the responses.
