Competition MUNCIE: Quotes, Stories, Rumors....

For the guys that sled pull automatics, what side of 4 wheel do you pull in, low or high? Also, do you manually shift it or just put it in drive and let it do its own shifting?

There's much more torque on the output shaft (weak link) of the transmission in 1st gear than there is in 2nd or 3rd gear. A stock transmission output shaft will break in 1st gear with the torque multiplication of the DTT converter. It's happened at the drag strip and it's happened at the sled pulls.

If you get a billet output shaft, you won't have to worry about it breaking.

Most of us run in low range and let it shift into either 2nd or 3rd.

2nd gear low range is an easy pull, but you'll never get enough wheel speed to win. 3rd gear low range with the converter locked will require some power to pull off (550+ HP), but has the wheel speed to compete (40+ MPH).

You want wheel speed ASAP, so let it shift on its own as long as it doesn't get under your turbos. If you're running a big turbo or turbos than you might consider manually shifting. Otherwise, let it shift.

For a new puller, I'd put it in low range, 2nd gear and just stab it and hold on. :)

thanks for the info. I have been wanting to try pulling once or twice to see what it will do, but wanted to do things correctly to keep from breaking the output shaft but still do decent. Speaking of the billet output shaft, have you heard if its out yet?

98slushbox, why don't you just stick to the dounuts in the parking lot across from the Signiture Inn at Muncie you seem to do just fine at that. If you really want to pull just drive mine maybe you can do beter than what I did. Oo. Oo.

Jeremy,

I thought that you did pretty well... ... ...

13th in the 7200 PS out of 50+ trucks. And tied for 5th in the 8000 PS out of 40 trucks. Hopefully next time you can get some traction!!! :)

Ive had the Billet output shaft from DTT/ Steve Opie for about a month now. Id say its pretty much unbreakable at this point. I would have snapped 10 stockers by now,the billet one is still going strong. I plan on sled pulling soon and will report any carnage I may have. I think the dana 70 will be the first broken part .

Snow I believe your right about the Dana 70. I guess Ill find out how much the new gears and locker can take in front of the sled.
