I have a 1998 3500 dually with an automatic trans

and was wondering if anyone has converted

one to a manual trans. What parts would

I need besides a trans, new clutch, and flywheel.

auto to manual

I converted my 95 4x4 to nv5600

It was a pain since this trans was not meant to fit in the truck. It was WELL worth it, however it was VERY expensive.

Here is the 411

You will need new brake and clutch pedals, get from dealer, they are surprisingly cheap.

Get the nv5600 w/1 3/8 shaft. This enables you to use newer, larger flywheel and clutch

You need to do some wiring jumps, and cut the hole for the trans. shifter. If you have 4x4 it is tricky as the shifter is VERY close to the t shifter.

You will need a shifter boot as well. Also a newer cross member, or you can modify yours. You need to buy a slave cyl from a 2000-2002. You need a throwout lever and other necessary tiny parts

I bought my trans, clutch, press plate etc from Blumenthal in OK.

Total cost with shipping, around $4000. 00

Parts from dealer were around $350. 00

If you need more info let me know

Cheaper, easier, longer lasting, more fun, to get a DTT built automatic. Go drive one, see for yourself, then call them. www.dieseltrans.com

I have a 5 speed in my truck. It sucks. I'm jealous of every customer's DTT that I build for him, unfortunately. :D

Honestly, it's a better choice for everyday driving to have a DTT automatic, compared to the conversion nightmare.....

probably cheaper to sell the truck and buy one with a manual transmission IMHO... use some of the time/money you save to put towards buying a real clutch for the 5sp truck, and you're in business! :D

I am interested, as that does not seem like to much money to me. Jim

auto to manual

Jim, if you live in TX Standard transmission and gear is closer. They sell kits to swap the 5600 from the 4500. This is sort of the kit I got from Blumenthal, however it really only includes the shifter, a t-case lengthening bar(which I didn't need. Also included was an adapter bracket for the t-case which didnt fit my application. I bought from blumenthal as they sold me the nv5600 (a remanufactured one) with NO core charge, they sold it outright. This is probably why it was so cheap. I have heard the core charge could be as much as $1500. 00 elsewhere.

FYI I didn't need to lengthen or shorten either driveshaft (mine is a 4x4.

I did however have to put in a larger input shaft into the t-case. It needs to be a 29 spline. Blumenthal will sell you this shaft for around $200. 00 I think. Or If your t-case is shot they will sell you the whole case for around $1050. 00

If you need more info, just ask.

It was cheaper than buying another hopped auto, and I don't mind shifting. The Manual also doesent suck power away b/c no torque conv.

I feel the say way about the automatic, just does not meet my needs. I wont more than 3 gears when pulling my trailer... I sent you a pm also. I would like a 6 speed and a south bend clutch. I just need to know how to get there in the most cost effective way with my 95 4x4. thanks Jim

MANUAL TRANS

Jim, start by calling Blumenthal, and just order the trans. Call Southbend and orede the flywheel, clutch, etc. Meanwhile plan on making friends with someone at the part dept. at your local dealer, you'll make several trips to get what you need. I can almost promise you everything will need to be ordered. Ren or buy a trans. jack, the 5600 weighs around 400 lbs. I have gotten the auto and the t-case out by myself several times w/o a jack, but it is scary. Once you have everything, lay it out next to the truck and check measurments etc. Plan on having someone experienced help you. To get the Trans shaft to line up w/ the pilot bearing, it will most likely take two people, one person to jack the front of the motor and one person underneath guiding the trans.

I will try to figure out how to post pictures to you if you need them. I'm a computer idiot.

Worst case scenario, i'll snail-mail them to you.
