Hi, In the owners manual it says to change the oil, filter and adjust bands in the transmission every 12,000 mi. Do they adjust bands or just change the fluid and filter. I have a 97 2500 with 3. 54 gears. Thanks for the help Ron

You will probably have to go to a dealer and instruct them to adjust the bands. It will cost more than the oil change places that will not adjust the bands or know how to. A transmisssion shop is should know how but you might get a high pressure sales job (some solids is normal in the transmission pan). For less than the dealers cost, I bought an inch-lb torque wrench, fluid, filter and followed the instructions in the manual. For less than three dealer visits you can install a MagHytec pan that makes the job easier.

Band adjustments are not needed, just change the fluid and filter. The kind of bands in today's transmissions are not the thick ones that looked like brake linings and did wear and did need adjusting. Once your bands are adjusted properly, they rarely need to be re-adjusted. Just a money maker for the dealers... It's worth noting that bands that are adjusted too tight can cause extra wear without any symptoms. Bands that are loose cause an RPM rise between shifts as the bands release the drum before the internal clutches engage. This doesn't hurt anything however. This information comes from a real transmission guru and is worth remembering.

Beware of dealer AT service. A local dealer had a sale on AT service, just $39, I fell for it. I thought how can they make money with a deal like that? Reason they can is they only replaced the filter, gasket and four quarts of fluid, no band adjustment.

I found after my inital band adjustment, done by me at 24k, that other adjustments every 24k were a waste of time. 175k on stock AT with no problems.

Thank You for your replys. I though that a band adj. was not nessery because I have been a menber of TDR ever since I bought my 97 new in 97. And don't rember reading anything about members adj. bands. Just changing oil and filter. Now I can put on my Mag-Hytec DD pan on. Thanks again people. Ron

Ps I love this web sight.

What is it about the MagHyTech transmission pan that makes it easier to adjust the bands? Or have I misunderstood the discussion and it is the drain plug that is the important feature being addressed?

The bands take about 5 minutes to adjust. Why not do it? I do mine every fluid change (every 20 to 25,000 miles) cause the book says to.

Me too, and also because DTT suggested I adjust the bands at change intervals.
