I'm ready to install my new Mag Hy-Tek pan on my trani and noticed that the owners manual says the trani holds 17 quarts of fluid, the service manual calls out 3 or 3. 5 quarts and I read in the TDR archives that it should be about 4 quarts.

I realize the standard Mag Hy-Tek pan adds 1. 5 quarts extra to my year.

Could someone tell me if I just drain the fluid in the pan and replace the pan and filter, how many quarts will I need to put back in?

Also, which type fluid do I use, the 3+ or 4+, or other?

Truck is 1997 with auto trans, 46RH?

Thank you.

Your truck has a 47RE.

The amount of ATF drained depends on how long it has been sitting. What I do is drain it, measure how much was drained, and put that much back in. In your case you would need to add 1. 5 quarts to the amount drained. ATF+3 works for yours.

Thanks Joe, I thought it was a 47RE but read somewhere that it had a 46RH.

I'll pickup up about 6 quarts of fluid before I start the job that way I should have enough.

Still can't figure the owners manual quoting 17 quarts unless they mean completely drained dry.

Call me crazy, but this is how I do mine. I take off rubber line going into the cooler. Then, with the park brake set, I have someone I trust start the truck in "N". The fluid will start flowing into my 5 gal bucket. When the flow stops, I have the helper shut it off. Then I drop the pan after it sits a while, dump whatever is left in there & change the filter. Usually takes about 9-11 qts. to fill this way.

Mine usually takes about the same as Dennis. I have a drain plug in my TC so I don't bother running it to drain the TC. Anyway, the amount varies but it will be more than six for sure.
