I was talking with another 01 CTD owner on a RV forum and he had asked about letting your truck idle for long periods of time. An Hour or so. I thought this would damage our auto trans. Yes or no can anyone explain to me if it does or doesn't?

Thanks

If it were my truck... .

I'd pop it into neutral and engage the parking brake.

There is more fluid flow across everything in neutral - a good reason why you check the fluid level in neutral.

Unless your air/oil heat exachanger gets its airflow blocked off..... or if your coolant/oil heat exchanger clogs up/leaks... . you shouldn't have any issues... . provided your coolant temp is 'normal'.

Other than that - go for it!

The cylinder washdown after extended idling topic has been beat to death and then some..... do a search and find out how the engine may react to extended idling.

Trans temps also rise in gear with no motion. How hot would they get in an hour? I really doubt anyone has been silly enough to find out... ...

No way would I idle for an hour... ... Reasons mentioned above, trans would heat up. Also, Cummins recomends no longer than 15 minutes on idle due to cylinder wash down as also mentioned above. To each his own.

The temps shouldn't raise with the transmission in neutral..... even if they do - they won't be as high as if the transmission was in gear.
