I'm having an apparent leakdown of transmission fluid in my transmission. When I go out in the morning to leave I can wind the engine up to 2700 rpms in drive and it will not move for around 20-30 seconds and then slowly engage so I go out and start it ans let it idle for a while and then take off. I think the transmission is "losing prime" or leaking down internally. Stealer rebuilt about 7K back and I have about 5K on a new valve body from Gomers. Anyone have this problem or have any ideas?? It will be Ok all day , it is just after it sets all night. Temp has been in the 80's here. Also, went to Stealer and bought the 'NEW' transmission oil. They also have a new gasket instead of the cork one that is rubber and metal and supposed to be reuseable.

Here is a breakdown of part #'s and cost:

03515996 filter $9. 00

02464324-ac gasket $14. 00

05013458AA Atf+4 Auto trans fluid gal. $24. 52 ea

Total cost w/2 gal oil = $72. 04 + tax.

new oil

I just read the jug the 'new ' oil comes in and it is supposed to be a "fill for life' oil. Uses those very words on label. Are you not supposed to change any more?? are they nuts or trying to sell more parts? At any rate I will always accept a higher quality product. :D

It's normal. There was a recall on early models, late ones came stock, to add a check valve in the line to the cooler, it works to prevent drainback but also restricts flow to the cooler. Many folks remove the check ball to keep things cool, yours may have been removed when the trans was worked on. Sounds like stealer ripped you on the cost of the ATF, for that price you could have used snythetic.

Check the fluid level?

When you check the level make sure to cycle it in forward and reverse to fully load the system before going to neutral. You may be a quart low after all the service work recently performed on your trany.

A thought

thanks for the thoughts. Have driven it a couple thousand miles since last work. oil level has been checked and external leaks checked. was originally fine, just started happening one morning. maybe this check valve wherever it is has turned to junk. :(

Just let it idle for 30 seconds in N in the morning, according to Bill K,this is good for the transmission, and helps lube the reae section of the trany before you take off, this in turn reduces the amount of metal you get in your ATF pan when you service it.

drainback

Drainback of the converter is present in all automatics, it depends on the hydraulic systems as to how fast it fills on cold start up, and the wear at the pump bushing, pump gears, manual valve, linkage adjustment, crossleaks in valvebody, etc. , as to how severe it is. Modified valvebodies such as the DTT allow for more converter fill, thus less time to fill the converter in the morning. As to the drainback valve, it merely slows the drainback and serves as a restrriction to cooler flow which in turn is lube to the geartrain in the trans. Allowing the engine to run for perhaps a minute before putting into gear,in neutral, is a small thing compared to the benefits at start up. It is a good idea to let it run a little before going even on a warm engine to allow the lube system to be charged up. My . 02.
