I have a 95 automatic 4x4 I ordered new. For the past 3 to 4 years I have been having a problem with the transmission "over drive or Converter lockup" shifting up and down or lock & unlock while on tirps in cruise control. I have had it to our local 5 star dealer several times. They have replaced the wiring harnese on the transmission, replaced the tranmission computer and reprogrammed the computer. Still I have the problem and it seems to be getting worse.

Could my TPS be causing the tranmision shifting by sending bad info to transmission computer? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks in advance for any advice. .

Bob

Those are the classic symptoms of a bad TPS.

Sounds exactly like when all of my TPSs have gone out. They're really easy to change, I'd do it myself if I were you. Even though it's nice and little it's still not cheap so I don't see paying labor on top of parts cost. Just my $. 02 worth.

Thanks all, I figured it was probably my TPS. Just ordered one today $169. 00 at loacal parts store (Borg Warner I believe). I do not know why my "5 Star" dealer couldn't figure this one out!

I've had good luck on my '95 by just spraying the TPS down with electronic cleaner every other oil change. 122k on the stock TPS.
My theory on why they go out is that the contact windings burn out in the area they ride in the most. Seems like if you would vary your speed especially while using the cruise control the TPS may last longer i. e. don't always set it at 60 try 62 or 64 at times also.

Bob,wecome to the TDR,hadn't noticed you here before, good to have another member from the eastside, there aren't many of us. You farming?

Thanks,
I have never tried to clean my TPS. However, I have noticed that setting the cruise at different speeds did seem to help for short periods of time. Now it does not seem to help. I get the symptoms at all speed 60 - 75mph.

I had noticed your Chelan signature before. I get out on the forums quite a lot but mostly just looking. Little shy about posting!
