i have had a problem with my '92 CTD going in and out of OD while driving down the road. I had this trouble once before and I washed the TPS out with contact cleaner and it worked for months. But the last couple of days it keeps looking for OD. My throttle linkage has some play in it from the plastic ball sockets. Would this be some of the problem? I also heard that there is a "pressure switch" on the trans that could cause this. What is this switch actually called? Could it also be part of it? Some times I can shake the shifter around and it will go into OD. Is this just coincendental? It shifts great otherwise. Thanks

Throttle linkage out of adjustment, TV cable out of adjustment, TPS out of adjustment, speed sensor, trans temp sensor, electrical connections bad, ground bad. These can all cause the problem you are having. If it shifts into OD when you accelerate but then starts dropping in and out of OD it is probably the TPS or speed sensor. Most times it has been the speed sensor or a bad connection somewhere in the harness. If you have not done so clean and apply dielectric grease to all connections on the trans, speed sensor, TPS, crank sensor, etc. If you have slack in the linkage that can be fixed with a $25 kit from DC that has steel ball sockets and a new rod. If that doesn't cure it I would put a mystery switch in and see if the issue is with the trans or electronics and go from there. Good luck.

Tps..........

I'm in agreement with what cerberusiam said. I solved the TPS problem by installing a 10 turn reheostat in lieu of the TPS. Cost is somwhere around 15. 00 for device and shielded wire. I had it in about 2 months before I went on vacation, sota dialed it it in those two months. Trip was about 4,500 to 5,000 mile and never a glitch.

The best thing about it is that if it goes bad it costs 12. 00 or so to replace. I can also jump in the TPS if I need to untill the reheostat is replaced. I will not pay 200. 00 for a new TPS ever again... ... no what I mean , Vern? I had been thinking about doing this prior to reading about it on another website but somebody tried it but used a single turn device. I like the ten turn device better.

Rehostat

AZ Jim, you need to be more specific on the device. It is the first I have heard of such. I knew that the TPS was a rehostat device. You may have the solution to the TPS, PCM probs that all the automatic ODs are plaged with. The TPS is a piece of poop and the PCM isn't much better when they are 100%. Get a few miles on them and el-crapo.

Where and how is it wired in? What is the functionality of the system after you did this? How does the system respond? What is the part list for this mod? Where did you get your parts? Do you have a switch so that you control OD function or does this make the system work like it should or did when new?

200 bucks for a TPS, yes I do know what you mean. I am convinved that the dealer sold me a used (non functioning) TPS.

Thank You

James

TPS Connection

Cleaned and put dielectric grease on connection,,so far so good. Thanks for the help guys. Isn't this site neat for troubleshooting? Everyone chimes in and things get done. Thanks again
