I read about a dozen threads on what a mess it is to drop the pan and change ATF without a plug in the pan. I was all set to make the mess when I found an easy way.

After removing the bolts from the front of the pan and loosening the bolts along the sides (some fluid showered in the the drain-pan) I slipped a 1/4 inch vinyl tube into the gap between the pan and trans and started a siphon -- 10 minutes later the transmission pan was pretty much empty and was a snap to lower.

I should have put a threaded plug in... . maybe next time.

You boaters out there may know this one

Another easy way to get most of the transmission fluid out before dropping the pan is to use a top side changer. It's available from all boating equipment suppliers and is basically a heavy duty metal gas can with a hose you stick down the dip stick tube to extract the oil and on the other side of the can is a pump (Manual or Electric) that pulls the air out of the can and thus sucks the transmission fluid out of the pan and into the can.

Another idea is to remove the rear cooler hose, slip a piece of hose on the end, put that in a bucket and start er up, select neutral. When its starts to spit air shut it off and take the pan down.
