I'm looking for any ideas on a friend's transmission problems. It is a '98. 5 with both the ecm and pcm reflashed and is stock.

Driving at highway speeds while cold it will go up through the gears normally and letting off from these speeds will release from lock up and coast like normal. When the transmission gets up to normal running temp and you let off it will drop out of lock up, coast for a little bit, and then drop into 3rd and hold there. I'm positive of this because I can hit the overdrive off button and nothing will change staying in third. Also, after this, when you accelerate from that point it will hang in third, finally go into overdrive and immediately hammer lockup.

I have heard of issues close to this but have had little success finding any answers. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

-Jay

No takers on this one? Surely someone must have a thought/suggestion/solution. With all the experience and talent belonging to this organization, there must be someone out there that can help! :)

It could be one of several things, OD governor, OD clutches, or a VB problem.

Is the PCM throwing any codes? Is the trans slipping in OD? When did the problem start? Did it start all at once or steadily decline to this point?

The elctronic trans controls are a painf if things aren't just right. Some times it takes a while to track them down. Your best bet would be a shop used to working on these trucks. PM me if need a local shop that may be able to help.
