Have a friend who has a 96 12 valve with the Cummins eng. He has 96,000 on it and yesterday while driving down the freeway at 65mph it started to cylcle in and out of o. d. He has lubed the tps with contact cleaner and also did the wire loom thing awhile back as preventitive measures. Any ideas as to what else the problem could be? The way he described it I couldnt tell if it is cycling in and out of o. d. or if the torque converter is cycling in and out of lock up. Any comments or ideas are appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I see you are up there near DTT. Why don't you have your friend call Bill Kondolay. I believe they have a noise filter just for that problem.

those fixes never really last long on most trucks. I'm sure somebody is going to chime in and say he has 1,000,001 miles on his rebuilt tps, but its best to bite the bullet and buy another tps through Cummins, ... not Dodge. if the truck were a 94-95, then you also would need to check the temp sensor.

Well, I have over 100K on the original TPS. Never cleaned it or greased it and have had no trouble.

When the truck was new, my OD would lock out on occasion but when it did, the light came on and I had to press the button to get it to go back to normal. It finally quit doing that and has been no problem since.

I would be inclined to believe that, in your friend's case, it is the TC that is unlocking.

I believe that touching the brake pedal will cause it to unlock. Check the brake light switch adjustment.

It also unlocks when the engine rpm is below 1000. If the tach is acting funny too, check the engine speed sensor.

Thanks for the advice. I will have him check the switch on the brake and also the other things that have been mentioned. If he buys a new TPS is there any adjustments that need to be done when he installs it. I read somwhere that an ohm meter is required to check something.

Thanks Dave Gardner

Mine was hunting in and out of O/D. Sprayed it good with contact cleaner. That did the trick. As far as I know, it is still the original TPS.
