I was installing Bill K's torque converter today, when you support the engine put a bottle jack in the front of engine. When you seperate the the trans from engine the engine wants to tip forword and cock betwean trans and bellhousing. I got to last bolt to take out and it was all bound up. I had to wrench it all the way to the end and bam the engine tipped forward. The last bolt burged up the threads in the bellhousing. I ran a tap in to chase it out.

I posted this a little while back. This seemed like a good time to bring it back as this is a challenging procedure and the more "heads-up" a person has the better #ad

There's more than one way to skin a cat, so here's my take on minimizing the TC trauma. I did this job alone, so I needed a way to manipulate the transmission safely without the need for another set of hands. So I unbolted all linkages/bell housing/drive shafts/transmission cooling lines from the transmission, took out 3 of the 4 x-member bolts from each side (leaving the top rear-most bolts in on each side) and took the jack from under the seat, cut a 2x4 to length to just fit the jack and 2x4 between the frame rails and spread them just enough to rotate the x-member backwards about 2 inches. With the transmission supported in the front with my floor jack and in the rear by the x-member, I slid the transmission/transfer case rearward about 6 inches which allowed just enough room to slide the old TC out and the new TC in. Be forewarned that the TC you take out is about 70 pounds or so and WILL LEAK fluid down your arms as you remove it. (If you do it this way make sure it is cool!) Be sure to start all six bolts through the flywheel into the TC before snugging them down as there is some play and the last one may not fit if the rest are already tight!
Anyways, this is how I approached it doing the job in my driveway. BTW, I put down a 10 ft by 20 ft thick plastic sheet under my truck to catch the oil and is a heck of a lot easier to slide around on your back than the concrete Enjoy, you will gain a healthy respect for the size/weight/strength of your truck's components and the end result is just magic.

Oh boy!!! Trans R&R's are my favorite! #ad

You don't know respect for these things until you have to reinstall an F550 transfer case with a Gear Vendors installed, with no transmission jack handy... Man, what a chore. Thing had to weigh about 150 lbs, and is a real b1tch to hold with one arm while you install a couple bolts!

I made a plate to bolt to trans. Then welded a 1 1/4" steel peg to bottom of plate to go in floor jack. You can leave transfer case on and remove all in one unit. If anyone wants to rent it e-mail me.

If you drove your truck within a hour or so. you mite watch out for hot transmission fluid from the TC. The TC retains heat well. On the last one I worked on we did not need a jack to hold the motor. the motor did not tilt eather way. It may have been the exhaust holding it. if you remove the cross frame the rear engine mount bolts too it will be easier to roll the transmission back on a jack. It took about 7 hours to do the DTT TC and VB.

PS: we cheated... we used a lift at a friends auto service center. but that TC was very hot even after it sat for a couple of hours.

Doing it myself, it took about 10 hours. I was doing it very methodically, double and triple checking everything so I wouldn't get into a compromising situation (ie. getting squished #ad
). Two guys, at least one with some experience should be able to knock it out in 6-8 hours.

i have a post somewhere with a step by step do a search ...

i did this the other nite alone pretty much , took me about 10 - 11 hours on my back with some air tools and this was just to swap the TC . man it was not fun , 2 guys with a lift and a trans jack can R=R it in about 5 - 6 hours , have done it that quick twice .

i also suggest removing the transfer case ... 6 nuts , no gaskets ... maybe if i had put a support under the front of the engine it would have saved me an houir and kept the dents off the cab floor , when the motor tips forward you will NOT get the trans back on with the Tcase on the end of it ... take it from me ... .

groundpounder , changed your mind about coming up for a visit ?

MoparMuscle, was that the 93% you put in? How do you like it. If you need a hand doing something like that, or anything else, give me a call.
