A friend of mine just bought a 93. He wants to know if he can swap in the trans and lock up converter from a 96? Since I don't own any vehicles with autos,(except for the 96 I'm parting out) I need the expertise of this forum.

Thanks, Rod

In short, yes, the 96 transmission will bolt into the 93 with modifications. You will need the starter, flex plate, and bell housing off the 96 to get the transmission to bolt up correctly. You will need to modify the shift linkage position and shorten the rear drive shaft, lengthen the front one if 4x4, and modify the transmission mount frame to accomodate the different length. You did not state whether the two trucks were 4x4 and/or 4x2 so there will possibly be some changes to output shaft and/or tail housings that may need to be done. The speedo hookup could be a problem if the 93 is a 4x2 as the 96 used a different type of speedo control but it is possible to get the correct setup and make it work. The one thing you will need to check is whether the 96 is a RH or RE model. You can tell this by looking at the plug on the trans where the wiring hooks in. The RH will have a flat oblong plug with 4 wires, the RE will have a round 10 wire plug. With the RE model all the shift and lockup functions were computer controlled so you will need a standalone shift controller to make the transmission work at all. To the best of my knowledge that is not available today but there will be one released by a highly reccomended company in the 30 to 45 day time frame.

For all of you out there with gen 1 trucks, this means the better parts and technology of our gen2 brethern is will shortly be within our greedy little grasp, at least as far as transmission technology is concerned.

Demon Dodge, if your friend does not want to wait or is not interested pm me because I am very interested in the transmission and related pieces.
