Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) auto trans

I've read a lot of posts regarding the failure of the autos, and have experienced two failures myself, but those were due to the dealer's inability to reassemble them correctly.

Is it the TC that fails and the rest of the trans is pretty tough, or is it just weak all over? I know the valve body helps with lubing, pressure increases etc. but if a heavy duty TC is installed along with a valve body, will this pretty much eliminate the failures?

You've pretty much got the right idea. The TC clutch is the weak link in that it won't handle the torque of the engines. It destroys itself, sending debris throughout the rest of the transmission.



The stock TC stator design is also poor in that it slips tremendously until the engine is over 2000 rpm. The transmission itself has some weak points too, but not near as bad as the TC.



Check out all the quality aftermarket TC's available for these trucks. There are 3 or 4 good ones out there. Research everything before making a decision.

I appreciate the replies, it's just hard to believe a trans that has such a good track record with the gas engines, would be so weak now, but with the torque of the CTD, I guess something had to give. I have a reman trans in place right now, but will upgrade it down the road once the warranty is in place for awhile. I know DTT and ATS, Goerend Bros. etc have excellent products, so like you said, there are some good choices.
