Anyone ever experience the shift lever feel like it doesn't want to leave the Park position? It almost feels like you parked on a hill with the weight of the truck on the parking pin. It takes quite a bit of effort to move the lever out of Park. When it does move the bind releases and makes a loud clunk. Doesn't seem to be a driveline clunk, sounds more like the the auto transmission linkage freeing up. The same noise can also occur going from Reverse to Park. Doesn't happen all the time. It is much worse when moving the lever slowly into or out of Park. Doesn't seem to be any slop in the driveshaft / rearend. Are there any adjustments and/or lube points for the linkage? Other than that, transmission operates same as always.

Thanks,

Dave D

I have heard that this is a problem with the diesel truck. (1) The linkage can slip slightly. It is located in the driverside fenderwell about 18in from the stearing nuckel up toward the break booster. Look for shiny scuffs about 1/16of an inch at the washer. or look for mud or nicks that could have come from road debris.
(2) The linkage in the tilt wheel back plate area may be binding against the plastic around the column shroud. Pull the black plastic section that holds the hassard switch toward you as firmly as you can and wiggle it. Try the shifting again if it made a differance remove the black plastic covers and look for the pinch points. retighten while pulling toward you. If these don't help you will have to give it to the dealer for day so that they can doa 5 min. fix.

You're not alone. My '94 does this also. I haven't figured it out yet. Sometimes it happens a couple of times a day and then it might go a week without doing it.

My 96 does it once in a while, usually after it sits for a long time. Very hard to pull out of park into reverse, but from there on no problem.

Had this happened to my "99. " A simple adjustment on the rod Mr B spoke of. If not corrected, eventually the bolt holding the plate to the frame shear off. This happened to me also. When I put it back together again, the linkage was binding and had to re-adjust.

My 95 does the same thing when parked on a incline & the binding is very bad on steep inclines. I have found that applying the parking brake before putting the trans in park helps. (this takes the pressure off the driveline)then when I return to the truck I put the trans in gear before relasing the parking brake.
