Okay here are symptoms truck is 96 in sign. but with 224k on it now.

When COLD truck does not like to shift back and forth between 1-2 or go into 1st to begin with just sits in no man's land no slip no noise like neutral. When it finally drops into gear there is no slip smell sound just effortless acceleration. This is true until transmission gets to about 75-80F then everything runs fine.

Some history I have only had gauges since about 160K; transmission will get WARM without a load ~180 in stop and go traffic but at speed locked 3 or 4th stays <125F but with a load it gets HOT like ++250 at speeds less than 40 (2nd gear) whether stop and go or side street pace but once into locked 3-4 temp drops quickly to 125 or less. This is sort of irrevleant of outside temps as it hit 180 last week in 40 degree ambient unloaded. I have religously changed transmission fluid every 25K miles.

Now if I need to replace the transmission I want to go the whole kit and kaboodle route no rebuilt all new parts new Dodge seems to be about 4k reman about 3k. The DTT transmission sounds interesting and have heard very good things about them but I have had good luck pulling huge loads with stock unit and DunRite TC. So I have to ask is it better for me to go with stock new unit and have the upgrade done or rebuild/exchange this one.

Am not a transmission expert but wouldn't an out of adjustment band also cause slippage and the high temps Eric is seeing?

Bill,

The bands in these transmissions are really thin. They can't stand much slipping. An out of adjustment usually shows up as a shifting problem. Adjustment affects the timeing for the band letting go and the clutches engaging. Too close and you get a bind because there is an interval where both are holding. Too loose and you get a short interval where nothing is holding so it feels like a slip.

Last time I checked you could get the full boat DTT transmission for about $3200, it is listed on the website. If a reman stocker is $3K and a DTT with all of the tricks is $3. 2K it is a pretty easy decision for me. I would venture that the 250+ temps are mostly from and inefficient milled stator and loaded truck. If the transmission is still functioning somewhat it should be a viable core, if you kill it completely it may not be.

Eric, you have gotten 224K miles out of the original transmission in the 96?

Yep and I haved hauled HEAVY HEAVY with it my last weigh slip is 24590 with prior to filling up and and without me so over 25 seems like the common heavy load for me.

At 75k it did some strange stuff shifting into OD and DC replaced an internal solenoid to correct it but bands everything else have not been touched.

But is transmission(belts, pump everything total replace) dying or is the pump or valve body, one component failing? The DC guys said yep you need a transmission but it doesn't slip not a bit when it fails to shift motor freewheels and I coast then it hits and gets.
