Just a thought but what type fluid am I supposed to be using in this 47RH?? (9500 auto). I've got a mag high tec deeeeep pan on it.

Dexron III in my pan.

The way it was explained to me is that the newer and fully electronic Chrysler transmissions require the ATF+X formulas. The nice old 727 transmissions including 47RH and 47RE only need a quality and conventional fluid.

I do plan to go to a synthetic fluid because of my cold winter climate.

edit

Hey illflem, no fair editing without having the tattletail.

Dextron. Only somebody from Warshington would call it that?

My '96 has the 47RE in it, and have only used the ATF +3... ... is the Dexron III o. k. to use without any problems? It is sure easier to find, and considerably cheaper. I was under the impression it messed up the shifting etc. The manual seems pretty clear about ATF +3 or (+4), with Dexron III only in an emergency. Product sales gurarantee? I'd appreciate any input you guys may have if you have had good luck with Dexron.

Being a DTT installer, I can say that we run the Dexron III/Mercon fluid in all the trucks initially. This does NOT have the friction modifiers that the +3 and +4 Chrysler fluids have, and cause a more positive shift with less chance of slippage.

Bill K. originally told us to do this, and if a customer complained of TC shudder or rough shifting, to add aftermarket friction modifier - to date we have never been requested to do this.

For synthetic, we run the Red Line Hi-Temp ATF, which is the equivalent synthetic of the Dexron III/Mercon (as far as the friction modifiers go).

Illflem, thanks for the update. The forward to Bill K's forum seems to indicate Dexron III is better where heavy loads or bombed engines are involved. The motor oil in the trans intriques me, as it seems to have more lubricating qualities from Bill's statements. I would never have thought you could use motor oil in the autos, but Bill seems confident with it EXCEPT the valve body functions. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

In the meantime, I guess Dexron III would be the lube of choice for heavy duty use.

I forgot to mention another point.

My trany rebuilder finishes things by adding LubeGuard (black bottle) to the Dex-III fill. He was doing some dyno testing and they changed nothing except for adding a bottle of LubeGuard to the transmission. Measured temps dropped significantly. He's been adding it ever since.
