My 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel with towing package owners manual does not tell me the transmission oil capacity including thr piping and auxiliary transmission cooler.

I sent an e-mail two days ago to the Dodge Dealer in Columbia, SC and today I heard that "they are working on an answer".

I want to purchase the correct amount of AMSOIL so I can replace all of the existing oil in the system. Can some one tell me how much I should buy?

Are there are any things I need to be careful to ask the dealer to do to ensure that the system is properly drained?

Thanks

I have a 98. 5 model w/tow package and my service manual has a couple different numbers.
In the fluid capacity section it states the 47RE takes 29-33 pints (if you can believe that). In the overhaul/service section it states that if you have overhauled, drained cooler, serviced torque converter you should add 12 pints (6 quarts). I've serviced my transmission twice but the last time w/synthetic and I purchased 15quarts. That's with replacing the T/C. I've just recently purchased AMSOIL Universal fluid and I bought two 2 and a half gallons for both the transmission and the transfer case and that should be enough to do both with some left over. The transfer case capacity is:
3-3. 6 pints for NV231HD
5 pints for NV241LD
6. 5 pints for NV241HD

Hope this helps.

If you do a "complete drain" it's about 17 qts. I believe the dealers have a "machine", that does a complete drain and not remembering exactly what the process is, I'd order a couple of extra qts. I had a new tc/vb a while back and it took exatly 17 qts and the system was completely drained. I had ordered 19qts and it's a good thing because soon after I developed a leak because one of the cooler return lines hadn't been tightened properly and I lost about 1/2 a qt of fluid before I noticed this red fluid on my drive way.

I was told by a reputable TC mfg. in So. Calif you can remove all of your Trans fluid if you apply an air hose to the port on the passenger side of the trans (with the gear selector in DRIVE), the same port used to get pressure readings. Has anyone tried this method?
