Auto transmission fluid temperatures

What are you guys seeing for temperatures while empty? Sensor is located in the oil cooler line between transmission and the oil/water cooler. I installed Geno's transmisison temperature gauge on FSchmidt's truck and he is concerned that his temperatures are too low. He has only seen 175 F once and that was setting in a traffic jam for about 10 minutes. I thought that it was normaL but I only have manual transmission trucks. Some one on here must know if what we are seing is normal. Thanks Ken Irwin

Most I have seen empty is 120*. I've only had the gauge installed for a week. High outside temp has been 60*.

My transmission gauge barely moves unless I'm towing or if the temps are warm and I do a lot of stop/go idling. Otherwise it barely moves at all.

The highest I have seen it is right around 200*while pulling some long grades with 14k behind me normally it's inbetween 130 and 150 with just normal driving... Sensor is located in the test port at the top towards the passanger side.

Normal operation of my truck without towing has been between 90-140. When I have been towing in the warmer days, it has gone up to 162. But that is usually climbing a grade. Otherwise it will stay about 140+ or -.

I am using an X-Monitor gauge.

I have the sensor in the test port just like Clayton. I see the same temperatures

also. It hardly ever gets above 130 running empty.

I usually run under 130 empty with outside temps above 70F, and the guage never moves if it is less than 50F. I have seen over 200 on a long steep (20 degree slope or better at less than 10mph for over 15 min)grade in low lock while hunting in the mountains.

i pulled a 30 ft 5th wheel from florida to kentucky and never seen transmission temps above 180 on my transmission guage and my senso is in one of the plugged off holes on the transmissin that is always submerged in fluid. ( that was with overdrive activated) not tow haul mode and i was running the edge ez on max setting... ..... EGT temps are your biggest worry . I've been at 1400f several times and no problems yet. averaged 14. 5 mpg with the rv going 65 and 70mph. for you guys with mpg on the 600 motor issues i get 16. 5 in town with the edge set on max and the latest tsb flash done. . the tsb flash gave me about 1. 5 mpg better fuel mileage and i get 21 mpg running empty on the interstate at 65 wich means i'm actually going 70 mph with my 315 bfg's mounted.

You stated you mounted your trany temp in one of the ports on pass side of the 48re. I assume you mounted it in the middle of the three ports available which Dodge recommends. You should be aware this port will see a max of 260 degrees and is also the high trany temp and you may see 300 psi. What temp sending unit you using? And which port you using?

I have the sensor mounted in the forward most port, I have di-pricol guages.

I chose this location from reading other threads about mounting it there. It was a real easy install, just unscrew the plug and replace with the sensor. Hook up wire and dress everything up. 300 psi at this point? you have me concerned.

I really didn't have the time to drop pan and install senser so I went over to Elk Grove Dodge. I was able to go back into shop and talk to the trany mechs and they had a 48re on the bench. With their trany manual and the benched unit I was told the 2nd plug back from front was the correct plug as this would measure correct temp prior to being cooled. This port would see max of 260 degrees and 300 psi on an underload reverse mode.

I'm using autometer, so I called their tech support and asked the question and was told it would handle both. I hooked it up yesterday but haven't tried it out.

I have seen 180' in stop and go city traffic, 100'-120' freeway driving (empty). Just a bit higher towing.
