Well, not shifting properly. There are two different problems here. One looks like the truck is trying to start in 3rd gear (I feel one shift before going into OD that I think is the TCC lockup). The truck will move in this mode, but it's kinda worrisome when you really need to get out in traffic. The other problem is that the truck will start in 1st, but then it won't grab 2nd. At about 20 mph and 2000 rpm it's just like it won't go any faster. If I am careful I can ease it up to about 25 mph and 2500 rpm and it will shift fairly hard down to about 1000 rpm. It looks to me like maybe it's bypassing 2nd all together. I have a repair manual, but the troubleshooting section gives a lot of things to look for and I don't have a scan tool. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? I'm not looking for advice to get a new transmission. I am just hoping that it will not be too expensive when I take it to the dealer to get it fixed. Thanks.

The EXACT SAME THING happened to me with my 4R100 in my Ford Lightning race truck. I luckily had warranty on the "built" transmission, so I pulled it out and sent it back. Turned out to be burned up 2nd gear clutches. Funny thing is the transmission only had 200 miles on it. :(

Maybe someone on here can be more helpful. This is just a guess.

what I found out..........

Back a few thousand miles ago, my 99' would not shift out of first at all. Called dealer and found out it could be one of two sensors on the transmission. He told me to pull the "trans" relay, located in the fuse box on the driver side fender under the hood. I did and this allowed me to manually shift 1 - 2 - 3, just did not have overdrive. Was able to drive the 80 or so miles to their shop and avoid having to pay a wrecker bill. Turned out it was the sensor on the outside of the transmission, about 15 minutes and $25 later I was headed back home. Not sure if this is your situation but maybe you can pull the relay and see if that helps to find out if it is the sensor or not. Good luck.

i had the same problem and i had to replace the transmission. I smoked it and second was completely gone. I wish it would have happened right when it was new and then I would not have had to run that stock piece of crap for 70000 miles. What a difference a tripple disc and good transmission will make!!! STOCK SUCKS!

I think I found it

After some more searching, I found out how to read the error codes (on, off, on, off, on) and I have a governor pressure problem. Hopefully it is just the pressure sensor and not the solenoid because it looks harder to replace.

BTW, the codes set were:

P1757 Governor Pressure Above 3 PSI When Request Is 0 PSI

P1762 Governor Pressure Sensor Offset Improper Voltage
