I'm starting a "Wish List" for my 2 week old truck. My question is " Do the Alum transmission pans help that much with taking the heat out of the oil?" I know they look nice but do they work as advertised?

I have not tested or read any test reports to prove they do lower operating temps but I believe the combination of a deeper pan with increased ATF capacity and the finned aluminum pan do reduce transmission temps.

The Mag-Hytec products are excellent.

I'm an engineer and work on heavy equipment and hydraulic system designs. Along with heavy equipment engineers, I've worked with mechanical engineers who were part of the Apollo space program and something that I've learned from working in these areas is to condition (filter and cool) the oil/fluid you have and not try to add more if possible. When designing systems, I don't always have the luxury of a lot of space, so am often forced to become more creative in cooling and filtering the fluid.

I decided to apply the same logic to a truck I owned and rather than increase the oil capacity, I researched heavy duty coolers and was able to keep my stock transmission pan temperature under 175F all the time. The cooler was made by Tru-Cool and I did the installation for under $100. Prior to the installation my oil pan temp was always 210-225F or more which would have guaranteed an early failure. When I sold the truck at 260,000 miles, the original transmission had not failed and was still working well.

I dont have an automatice but I did put coolers in place of my PTO covers on my G56 and I had the temp gauge before the coolers were installed. Now the oil temp is lower than it was before the coolers were installed and the max temp is lower also while also increasing the oil capcity.

The pans have helped me and many of my friends and customers. The add on coolers do reduce temps but they also add complication and more potential failure points. If an add on cooler is poorly installed, inferior brackets or hoses you have just added a weak point. The Big pans are very hard for anyone to mess up on the install and there is no additional plumbing that will ever wear out.

I am also an engineer and I worked for 40 years at the largest earthmoving equipment manufacture in the world. In my last 20 years I was working in hydraulic equipment design and supervising other engineers in this area.

I feel that the Mag-Hytec transmission pan is an excellent design product. The Al fins and pan allow for heat to be dissipated with out the oil having to be pump through an additional cooler to be cooled. The additional cooler will cause an additional pressure drop in the system, the transmission oil pump will need to increase oil pressure to over come this pressure drop through the cooler. Which means the pump works harder to push this oil through the system.

The extra oil capacity is an additional benefit. This will help to extend the oil life by allowing additional heat transfer to the oil. This will also help to keep the oil cleaner since you have additional oil to suspend the debris in until the oil is cleaned by the dual filters, in the 68RFE transmission.

I have pulled my 5er all summer with the pan installed on my truck. The temperature probe is in the pan and my gage has never been above 180 F.

I am extremely happy with this design and the lower transmission oil temperatures. Just my $0. 02

I have a deep sump pan and the probe is in the pan and last summer at one point I hit 260@#*$*#! it is the norm for me to get in the low 200's while towing with the deep pan. I have just ordered a BD aux cooler with and fan and a thermostat and I plan on installing it under the truck somewhere near the transmission and box. I will also install an override switch so that I can turn it on before it gets to the 180 degree mark where the fan will kick in. I hope that this does the trick for $400 and some bucks.

I have a Mag-Hytec transmission pan and that is the only mod to the engine. When pulling a total of 21000 lbs the Trans temperature reads 75-80 degrees above ambient Temp. With no load on the truck I have never seen the Temp over 135.

Cheers Ken

Did the mag-hytec pan on my 09 as well. went very well. Have not towed with it yet. Summers commin' . .

This took about 3- 3 1/2 quarts more than stock. There is a port for a temp sender. . Don't have that on right now. Second pic is the stock pan
