Automatic Transmission Calculations

My 91 4x4's automatic transmission cold performance has generated yet another question. When the truck has sat for a day or so the transmission is slow to respond to my first gear selection. I usually have it in the garage and fire it up, give it 30-60 seconds of idling then put it in reverse or drive. If I give it gas right away the transmission doesn't grab. After about 5 seconds in gear it grabs and performs normally in all aspects. Does anybody else experience this? I think all of the fluid is draining out of the torque converter because of it sitting for a day or so. Anybody know?

CoastyAV8R, you've nailed it. The converter is leaking down. My "89" gas burner and my old 78 did the same thing. On the first crank up, I go to neutral first thing, it'll pump up faster. I've been a lot of miles with this condition, for me at least, it's not been a problem or resulted in any failures.

I haven't done it personally, but it is common to install a check valve in the transmission cooler line to prevent fluid drainback - (called an anti-drainback valve?)
