auto transmission reliability?

my 91. 5 has the automatic overdrive transmission which I am to understand is based on the old 727?



I know the 727 is strong, but how do these things generally old up?



mine's got almost 200k on it... the 1-2 shift at WOT isn't as crisp as others... I mean, I'm sure it'll hold up for quite a while... especially if most of the miles are highway miles...



guess I'm just looking for some reasurance that my truck isn't going to fall apart on me...

the 727 if maintained often will out live the truck. the overdrive now is another thing. i service mine every 20. 000 miles because i'm putting a lot of power into it and i tow a lot. two things i do are add 2 quarts of castrol 30wt engine oil and adjust the bands from the inside. the K-D band is the heart of your 1-2 shift and should be adjusted by placing a 5/16" spacer between the lever and the K-D piston. don't adjust this band using the manuals instructions. they are generec and don't take into account the ratio of your rocker. set the line pressure at 1. 250" and adjust the low/reverse band to spec. also make sure the K-D cable is set properly. run a cleaner/treatment through befor you service it. if you can check with your local speed shop to see if you can get some ' jones MOTOR PURR '. that stuff is the best in the world. it will clean everything and will treat all of the seals.

thanks for the info but you just flew right over my head with that one...



I generally only mess with manual trannies, and the only auto I've ever been inside is the Ford C4, which is about THE simplest auto transmission on earth...



looks like I need to get a service manual!

actually the 727 is simpler than any other auto. one thing i should make clear is on the K-D band adjustment. when you put the spacer in between the piston and arm breing the adjuster screew in till it just stops. don't crush it in. then set the lock nut and remove the spacer. now the band is adjusted the righ way. the 727 when working properly will handle just about anything. we used the behind fully blown hemi's and very seldom broke them. but if it can handle 1800hp, i quess it can handle our engines.

get a manual and you will see it is a very easy trans to service.

174,000 miles and still going (hopefully still strong). I have a friend with a 1990 truck with 330,000 miles on the original 727. I haven't adjusted the bands on mine yet, but I need to. Oh well, just thought you would like to see some numbers. How many miles does your truck have on it?

the truck has just under 200k miles... it'll be turning it any day now... my transmission is strong... doesn't slip or anything, but I think a little band adjustment will be nice.
