I own a 1991 ford 7. 3 N/A superduty 5spd as well as my recently purchased 1998 3500 cummins auto. My problem is the ford pulls my 6000# landscape trailer much better nember one because of its weight which I can live with but my problem is with the transmission.



The 5spd is direct and feels nice when pulling, for example I can idle while backing up my driveway. The Auto in the Dodge seems to be constantly shifting, locking and unlocking the converter, and to back up the driveway the engines needs to do all sorts of revving just to get me moving.



Is there a way to get the auto to shift firmer and more consistenly? Or will I never be happy without a stick?
 
Oh yeah, it just dawned on me that the rear ends may be part of the problem. My ford has 5. 13 and Dodge has Less I want to say 3. 54 but can't say off top of my head without looking just got the truck its a 3500 chassis cab. Im tahcing up about 1600 at 55 mph the dodge and 2600 in the ford?? Maybe I need new rear in dodge will that make for less automatic shifting?
 
Your rearend isn't the problem. The lower ratio rearend (in the superduty),will actually shift more,as the lower ratio makes the gear spacing tighter.



The factory Dodge convertor has too high of a stall speed and feels really "loose" . This contributes to it revving up more to move. A tighter or more effecient convertor will help that. There are also many transmission upgrades that will the shifting along with the convertor. DTT will give you some good info,give them a call. Here is their website.
