auto vs stick for sled pulling

What are the advantages of pulling with a stick over a full billet auto in the street class? The Dmax boys seem to be doing pretty good with the auto.

The full billet trans seems to be pretty bullet proof. Is it turbo spool up? Im just thinking out loud here but wouldn't you be able to better control tire speed/traction with an auto? Im no expert but Im starting to build a puller. Any thoughts are welcome.

thanks

The differnce is you can't shift a stick, the auto is easier to pull with ,tighten up the chain, put the pedal to the metal ,let it shift up & when you start to slow down it'll downshift.

I pulled w/a stick & wished it was an auto.

Isn't a full billet auto like twice the cost of a good pulling clutch ?

But in theory, once you go billet in an auto... . you shouldn't have to open it again. A good pulling clutch has to be rebuilt every so often.....

It depends how long that clutch will last? It seems the full billit trannys just keep going and going. Just got home from a friends house he has a NTPA blower truck with a Kieth Black Hemi and it has a turbo 400. It seems the slushboxes are making a return. Todd

Im thinking the same way as Josh. It may cost 3 times as much the first time, but then its done. If your going to be making a lot of hooks in a season, how often do you have to rebuild the clutch? If you wait to long, the clutch is going to fry anyway. Is it worth your time to keep having to do maintanece? Watching the Dmax pull, the downshift at the end of the track seems to make up some power for them.

It was funny a couple of years ago... there were very few if any automatics pulling. I asked the same question, and got pretty much no response. People basically told me sled pulling is for Manual trannys. Sleddy might remember the conversation.....

I had decided that I was going to try and make a kick butt puller with my truck and an Auto. Well I have the kick butt auto now... . just not the funding to get the rest of the truck up to "par" with the big boys!

I seriously think with the right combination, you can make an auto do VERY well pulling.

Interesting Steve. If all you are going to do is pull with it. Go with the stick shift.

If you are starting from scratch use a 5 speed because as you look into the future you will see SFI written on everything and the 5 speed will accept an sfi can. then you can use either a crower, or hays SFI multi disc clutch. No one ever stops building on their truck and I think soon the 3 disc will become the clutch of choice beacuse of power and wear considerations.

Auto's are ok if you have 7-10 thousand to drop in one shot and then hope nothing breaks. I don't care who builds the transmission every one of them has a breaking point and just because you spent big $ is no promise that someone will warranty it at no charge.

Yes I am for manuals, but they are cheaper to maintain in the long run than auto's . 3-6 hundred a year to rebuild a clutch will take 10 years to cost more than fixing an auto just once.

Bottom line is personal preference, driving abilty, and your relationship with your mechanic or parts supplier will make the decision for you.

If I had it to do over again from last year when I bought this truck I would have bought an auto. I could have gotten two or three in my area for around $10K and I gave $15K for my truck. :{

Im going to start with drive-train mods this year. Bars, loops, transmission, gears, ect. I want the stuff ready and right before I build the motor. Maybe next year on the motor. And yes I hope to pull with the TTPA. I already have a truck for the street. :D

Buy the way, this whole twelve valve truck pulling thing is all your fault. :-laf I knew what would happen if i went to to many pulls. Like one diesel pickup is not enough. Know what I mean. :p
