Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Automatic Lock-up switch

I rode in a buddies truck yesterday and he had rigged up a homemade lock-up switch. He said he found the two wires (orange and black) hooked up a switch and grounded it. It seemed to work pretty well, but how good is this on the transmission? I saw BD has one and it seems pretty pricy. Do they have built in safety features? Also, he was not specific on the wires, does anyone no which ones they are and how they would wire it up? His truck was a 95 2500 auto with a shift kit from Enterprise.
