Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Catch can

In my post the other day I mentioned rebuilding my 47re. I have been thinking more about about swapping to a 5 or six speed to eliminate the electrical gremlins that seem to haunt these transmissions. Since I’m just exploring options at this time, I am looking for links to threads, and any recommendation or experience. I’d love to hear some pros and cons. My truck is a 2001 2500 regular cab Laramie, 3.54 gears. It is used primarily for farm work, but is practically rust free and I figure on keeping it. 150,000 original miles. A third gen 6 speed swap is appealing to me, but I am totally open at this point. Like I said said in the previous thread I’d like to wake up the engine a little but nothing extreme. Thank you all in advance.

NV5600 was used up to year '05.5, then switched to G56. Both are solid transmissions. The G56 was designed for higher engine input torque. Wouldn't waste time and money on a NV4500. It has the lightest duty cycle and the extra gear with either 6 speed gives you a gear matched for most any driving condition one would encounter - loaded or unloaded.

There’s nothing sweeter than a built auto. I opted for an NV4500 swap when the 47RH went out in my ‘95. Went back with a Goerend auto with the ‘98. If I was swapping an auto to a manual today, I’d go with a ZF6.

Ditto on the Goerend auto. My friend had one installed and it's way better than my old DTT on my 24v. Be sure your builder is close by as Turbo Terry posted. Mine was 5.5 hrs away in AZ. Didn't work out too well.

Same here, the swap will cost you more then a top notch built AT from a reputable builder like Goerend.
I say stay with the AT as the Manuals aren't trouble-free after all. They had their own costly issues.

I had a DTT also. Bill had a guy here for a while in alaska that did the install 150 k miles on transmission still worked great. It really hooked up 85 % tc
