Block Heater Woes

Probably normal from what I've heard here, but is this trans supposed to feel like a slush box ? Hasn't given me any problems, but the engine spools way up as if it's slipping. Doesn't shudder or give any symptoms like a trans that's about to puke though, even tows good. Almost feels like a very loose converter, and then goes into lock-up kinda' hard.

Also, is this trans a glorified Torque Flite ?

You need a "low-stall" torque converter. This will get the power to the ground. Another thing to do at the time is install a shift kit. Your truck will then act like a truck. The shifts will be very firm and not like grandmas caddy. This will increase the lift of your transmission.

Do a search on trannys, TC's and shiftkits. There are tons of posts on the subjects.

I think your transmission is ready to go. Experienced similar symptoms as yours just before mine left me on the side of the road (for the second time) with no notice. Had an occurance where I noticed the RPM momentarily increased similar to a downshift or coming off overdrive, but that the RPM was not right for an actual downshift. This happened twice over a three month period and I ignored it because it worked so good otherwise. The repair specialist told me that a fourth gear spring in the accumulator was broke and that the front pack was gone. The front pack made sense since I only had reverse to drive home with. Would advise what the above fellow told you, beef it up, or dump it, preferently on a dealer, while you can to avoid paying $1500 like I did yesterday.

the slush feel that you get is because the tc lacks efficiency.

The hard shift you feel when going into lockup, is the difference between fluid couping and 100% efficiency when the converter locks up.

The difference between un-locked and lock-up as measured on your tach is a way to measure your tc efficiency in fluid coupling.

If your tc is functioning efficiently there should be approx. 150rpm difference between locked and unlocked under hard acceleration.

The smaller the rpm drop when going into tc lock-up the more efficient your tc is.
