Automatic transmission fluid change

Can anyone tell me approximately how many quarts of ATF I wll need when I drop the transmission pan and change the filter? Also, is the pan gasket reusable (48RE)?

Hiyo, yes the pan gasket is reuseable. Also, if you change the filter it

will hold 6quarts of fluid. You can use ATF+3 or ATF+4 it will not matter.

They are interchangeable even though +4 is required by chrysler.

Make sure the bands are adjusted properly. Good Luck.

do a search for band adjustment, some do it and say its simple to do, believe it takes a certain allen wrench to tighten them, not sure on this. I myself won't do it, but i buy my transmission filter kit from Geno's actually had one come in last thursday to have it done when i take it in for yearly inspection, I know that my 47RE only take 5qts with filter change, as for the gasket, they are reusable but just to be safe i always get the filter kit which has a new gasket with it.

Just follow the pages and then use the "menu tree" on the left to go straight to band adjustments on the 48RE.

How many miles on your truck? The bands don't need to be adjusted all the times, sometimes you are better off leaving the band alone unless you are having a problem.

My truck is at 25,000 miles. I am going to change the filter and fluid at 30,000.

Change the filter and top off with 6 quarts. Get 7 just in case. Do this once a year or every 20-30,000 miles depending on how you use your truck.



The band should never need adjusted. If it needs adjusting, then it needs to be replaced. These bands are paper thin to begin with. If it was loose then it was worn out.



ONLY mopar ATF+4 (which is synthetic) is approved in the 48re along with other DC trannies. DC just recently released it so other oil companies can start producing the ATF+4 spec transmission fluids. All Amsoil did was add modifiers to to meet the standard of ATF+4. So until DC acknowledges what transmission fluids are compatible, if anything other than Mopar ATF+4 is used, your warranty is voided. ATF+3 is not compatible.
